Events for the Mark 14 torpedoes

Post by ncc1701e »

Based on this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5e0Tor2kMg

And, based on this WIKI page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_14_torpedo

Both sources agree to say that the Mark 14 torpedoes problems were solved in September 1943 only.
But, the game is a little too generous because all issues are fixed starting May 1943.

The first event about the faulty running depth problem is correct. It was solved in August 1942. So, I would keep it as it is.

//USA submarines improve torpedoes

lifespan=tillTrigger
targetCountry=3
unitID=15

But, then, with the depth problem corrected, the magnetic exploder problem was discovered. This is only when the order was given, in June 24, 1943, to deactivate it that progress were made in terms of ships sunk. And this before fixing almost all problems in September 1943.

Thus, I would propose the following changes for the second and third event to align more to the historical dates:

//USA submarines improve torpedoes
$ChangeUnitAttributes
if_Date=6/24/1943
lifespan=tillTrigger
targetCountry=3
unitID=15
stats=3,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,3,0,0,6,2,3,100,80,1,1
addReportTo=Allies
text=CINCPAC ordered all submarines to deactivate the magnetic exploder to prevent Mark 14 premature explosions. +1 surface combat USA submarines.
$End

//USA submarines improve torpedoes
$ChangeUnitAttributes
if_Date=9/1/1943
lifespan=tillTrigger
targetCountry=3
unitID=15
stats=3,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,4,0,0,6,2,3,100,80,1,1
addReportTo=Allies
text=USA's navy and engineers fully repair all the defects in the Mark 14 torpedo. +1 surface combat USA submarines.
$End

Thanks. I ran some # comparisons.

USA double # of subs by 1943 and the tonnage sunk reflects that
They tripled the # of subs by 1944 and the tonnage sunk reflects that also

The tech errors we don't know how much it accounted for the losses but your findings match about what the data shows.
