Quick Technical Question

Post by DJAndrews »

I frequently come across references to turret position (eg. X,Y,M,Q locations) when looking into ship upgrades or histories. Does anyone know what the standard positons are or alternatively, a reference for such?

For RN:
forward of superstructure: A,B,C, with A being (guess what) the foremost one
center mounted turrets: P,Q
aft mounted turrets: X,Y,Z

For USN ad IJN:
from fore to aft: 1,2,3,4,5,6

For Germany:
from fore to aft: Anton, Bruno, Caesar, Dora

It seems that people tend to use the "ABC" naming scheme, probably due to the coolness factor[;)]. Seriously though, it does give a better idea of where the mount is located on the ship than other schemes, if you did not already know.

USN mounts were designated by a combination of the gun calibre and position and were numbered bow to stern and starboard to port. A Baltimore class cruiser would have a mount 81 (No. 1 8 inch) and 51 (No. 1 5 inch). This terminology was in use when I was a Fire Controlman in the 1960s and I believe that it dates back to WWII. These were officially spoken as "Eight One" and "Five One" and not eighty one or fifty one.

Oh! And the British battleship Agincourt used the days of the week as names for its 7 main battery turrets. Unofficially....but I'm not sure whether Sunday was foremost or aftermost...[8|] Come to think of it, my money's on Monday as A turret....
