Installation

Post by Sugar »

How do I install the game after the download?

The file doesn`t do an installation routine like other downloads, instead I get the option to chose an "application" to open the file, which doesn`t help a bit.

You have to add the file extension ".exe" to the file name, then it should be able to install.

How do I add the file extension?

If I just rename the file and add "exe" the file is called SC ACW Setup realease exe00. That doesn`t work either.

Unfortunately for some, likely due to AV or Firewall settings the extension is renamed to that 00.

If you rename the extension to .exe instead, then it should work.

e.g. it should be something like this:

StrategicCommand-AmericanCivilWar-SetupRelease.exe

The "00" at the end is added by Win10, I don`t know how to get rid of it. Just adding "exe." doesn`t work.

Try renaming the file and replacing the .00 with .exe and see if that helps?

That`s exactly what I tried to, Win10 adds the "00" itself at the end.

Are you sure that you are renaming it to end in ".exe"? Not ".exe." btw. Windows will try to execute any file that you double-click that has a .exe extension, and if it isn't a proper executable you should get the below error message:

Possibly you do not have file name extensions enabled in Windows Explorer? In which case you can't actually see (and so edit) the extension?

Yes, I am quite sure: .exe not .exe.

I don`t know nothing about extensions, I just tried to add .exe to the line, because this was the suggestion. I don`t use Win Explorer. I`m dumb but not mad.

The message you're getting ( chose an "application" to open the file) means the extension is not .exe, as Windows knows how to treat that file type. Unlike Linux, Windows uses the extension to determine the file type (carried over from MS Dos, not the best way). If you open a command prompt (click start button then type cmd, then press enter) then cd to the folder containing the file and type dir you should see the extension, then can use the ren command to fix it (ren file file.exe).

Also, Windows Explorer is the desktop GUI, so if you use Windows you use explorer. I meant File Explorer, which you can use to change that setting. Right-click start, select File Explorer, then in it click View then check the box for File Name Extensions. After than the extensions will be visible anywhere in the GUI.

Hey Sugar,

If you still cannot get it working I'd suggest contacting Matrix Support to see if they can help sort it out for you:

I had this issue too. I got that weird file named 00. On the second try I downloaded from the European server instead of the USA one. That time it downloaded as a zip file and all was well.
