Laptop fans switch to high speed on start

Post by rockmedic109 »

My computer is an almost two year old Alienware 17. When I start this game, the fans go to high speed. I've never had a game do this. I am playing at high resolution {3840xwhatever}, but other {3D} games never do this.

I also do not get an option for 1920x1080 resolution to play the game. They are all higher resolution.

Other than this, I have no problems and these don't really qualify as problems so much as annoyances.

That's an odd one and is it consistent every time you launch the game and right from the start?

I just ask as this is the first I've heard and wonder if it might be something else or something in conjunction with your PC?

I could see the game perhaps running a fan when the AI is calculating, as that can be processor intensive, but not likely for the graphics as it is all just handled in software memory and not refreshing and drawing to the screen the same way a 3D game would.

Every time I turn it on. I do not know why. I doubt the graphics can come close to taxing my system more than the abuse I heap on it in a heavily modded 4K fallout 4. If you haven't heard about it, then it has to be something with my laptop or my model/build of laptop.

The lack of a 1920x1080 resolution seems weird to me. Could this be related to the fans? Something to do with the graphics card {Mobile 2080 Super}?

Again, just an annoyance. I am enjoying the game despite my concern over how the system would relate to the Civil War.

I had this happen with another game that I thought shouldn't be too graphically taxing. Turned out to be an Nvidia Geforce Experience issue, for some reason it thought that game needed max graphics settings, including fan speed. After playing with the settings didn't seem to help, I ended up uninstalling Geforce Experience to stop it, though I'm sure it could have been done in another way.

Thanks for the info and for the 1920x1080 resolution, I'm guessing that is your native desktop resolution?

If so, do you have Windows scaling enabled, e.g. run at 75% scaling or something similar?

To narrow it down, can you tell me your default desktop resolution and then the resolutions listed and the Windows scaling setting?

3840x2160 is native.

In Display Settings it is set for 200% in Change the size of text, apps and other items. Not sure if this is what you want.

The in game menus are all easily seen. Some games are not and at 4K, my nearly 60 year old eyes cannot make out anything in the menus.

I didn't think of GeForce. It might be the...I was going to write problem, but it's more annoyance. My wife hasn't complained about the fan noise being too loud, so it does not rise to the level of problem.

That is indeed strange as with a 200% scaling setting, the default should then be 1920x1080, e.g. 3840x2160 divided by 2.

If I can ask, what display resolutions are offered by the game?

The only resolutions offered by the game are 2048x1536, 2560x1600, 2560x1920, 2560x2048 and 3840x2160.

Thanks and the graphics engine I use, SDL, auto handles this and essentially only lists the compatible resolutions with your system setup.

It can sometimes only list a few as in your case when the scaling is set to a non 100% value.

For example if you were to test this with a scale setting of 100% then you'd likely see more compatible resolutions available.

Not suggesting you play at a scale of 100%, but it could confirm that this is just how SDL sees things when set at different scale settings etc.
