Should the system default fire range of AAM and SAM still be MAX?

Post by GolasYH »

As a significant update of the missile's fuel and dynamics model has been introduced since public beta 1143.3 'tiny', now it's impossible for SAM and AAM to hit (or even catch) target at their max range, maybe it's better to give the WRA of these kinds of munitions a unanimous change(maybe 50% of max)
It's really tired for players to change them one by one at the beginning of the game since the 'tiny' beta was installed.

There is no good reason to lower it to less than Max by default, because it's a situational thing, sometimes the WRA can be at 100% for firing suppression shots or so, sometimes the same weapon is better fired at 40%.

One thing to point out to anyone willing to put the planning work in is that the new ROE templates can be used with WRA also. I have played a lot with templates for formations and WRA for different alerts levels, special actions, and event triggers recently and you can set those ranges any way you want. You can even create a template that loads at the beginning of the scenario to cut all AAMs to 50% or whatever you want. Of course there is a lot of finessing you have to do and the details can be a killer sometimes.

Even prior to the Tiny beta it was still generally a good idea for many long and medium range systems to to lower the max firing range; in many cases if you were willing to micro units it was trivial to exhaust a SAM's ammo stocks by flying into range, waiting until you were fired at, and then flying out of range. Repeat until there were no more SAMs left. With boost-coast that's probably even easier now. Whether the solution to that is to make the default firing range lower across the board I don't know, but I do agree that it can be quite tedious to edit the individual WRA's for every weapons system in a scenario and that some sort of limited bulk-editing capability for WRA could be useful.

Yes, but since "Tiny" the WRA needs to be much lower than before in many cases. It's really more complex than before, bulk-editing wouldn't help, it takes much more work to "balance" a scenario.
