What does the left-bottom FIGHTER ATTACK button do?

This is the button on the screen you can select additional bombers for a mission after selecting the lead unit.

I cannot find this mentioned anywhere.

I don't 100% know, but my guess is it can switch a a fighter to a FB role?

It's allows you to display dual-role fighters that can be used as both escorts and FB's, i.e. they can carry both a droptank and a bomb. Of course if you use them for bombers they are not available as escorts and vice versa.

Note that your P47's and others can be set to one or the other during the planning phase but not both by toggling bombs/droptanks.
