There has been a group of militia guarding that derelict ancient Mech we found back in the winter of 803. They were investigating some noises in the jungle when they were attacked, by Giant Yellow Worms. I was starting to believe they were just a fairy tale.
Luckily most survived, but they will never be able to un-see…
Also, I was so distracted with admin stuff, I let those mutants from the north-west get a little too close to Earthwhite, people are getting upset about it. Now I can’t push them back without declaring war. And what with the slavers….
Amongst all this there is news that some hot springs were discovered by some adventurers. There is no way I can keep a promise to help them out, they are over 1000km from our nearest support, but I will promise anyway. I need to show some heart to the people.

I have finally had to discipline Fluoway. The other leaders are really starting to wonder why I put up with him. Last year I had to stop him from executing a relative, now it is him getting offended by leaflets, or something. He is a familiar face to the people of Earthwhite, but they do deserve a better governor.
I had some corporate friends recommend someone. He isn’t great but he is better than I have seen for a long time.

I will have him replace Fluoway by the end of the year.

We have had no difficulty pushing the mutants further into the wastes north-west and keeping hold of the hot springs to the east. I am still against expanding more until we have better equipment though.

I have taken to favouring education and to this end have promoted teaching and things generally scientific. Talking of which, I was inspecting the ice-mines and happened across Owen (Tame Your Tresses) Zedigo at the edge of the reservoir. He was apparently about to test out some new swimwear style that involved heavy leg chains and concrete blocks. I remembered he is quite technical so I asked him if he would run the Model Design Council. He was overjoyed.

Things have been too quiet lately, there are whispered rumours of growing corruption and plots. As part of my push away from barbarism I am encouraging democracy – which I think is the way forward - but it is a change and I expect corrupt elements to resist.
Luckily, Sacred Circle, headed up by Aries Geode my SHQ commander, is the most powerful faction by a wide margin, and they also favour democracy. Second most powerful is the Lawful League, led by John Taylor, my SCC director, and they are not exactly anarchists. Ohh, a report on the Merchant League, looks like they are organised by Skip Fluoway, hope he’s doing ok. They should be happy about the growth of democracy and education. They meet in the old boiler room on Tuesdays and “role-play”

The major regime of Panzerbund sent an envoy. Basically they think they can blackmail us. We know nothing about them so I think it may be best to go along with it for now while I get a proper Secret Service council set up, with Rimmy Johnson in charge. Also we are having zoo’s built. Apparently they are great for democracies, keeping people distracted and so-on.
**deManglers Journal. Summer 820AA.**
Rimmy Johnson is as good as his (completely redacted) reputation. Here is a map of Panzerbund territory before he sent his spies…

...and here is one based on their first intel reports…

Images can be zoomed for more detail.

We now know a little more about Panzerbund. They are theocratic, slightly more advanced than we are with a much bigger territory. However they are quite like us in that they value intelligence. We also now know that there are other regimes out there that are bigger than us both, and possibly more barbaric. Perhaps we should consider keeping good relations with these priests. I’ll have John look into it.
We should also try to claim the territory to the north from the mutants. This should not be difficult and will be good experience. There is a magnificent brothel hidden in the forests there, I have heard, and we don’t want those Panzerbund priests closing it down.
Finally, it seems the Economic Council have not been researching anything. At all. For years. That wasted time cannot be reclaimed. I must keep a closer eye on these directors, especially Oscar Robinhands.

There are reports of aliens, as in, non-human indigenous beings, harassing our borders asking us for 1300 credits. This sounds like some soldiers either having a joke or possibly some really weird mutants trying it on. In any case we are not paying them.
Talking of mutants, we have had success claiming the lands to the north from them, also secured that brothel as well as another derelict mech from the old days.
Our attempts to get on with Panzerbund are having mixed results, they don’t want to trade but at least they are not declaring holy war on us.

Turns out it WAS aliens asking us for money before. Now it is clear that they want peace, because they were waving their appendixes at us, which, it has to be said, is difficult to interpret as a sign of aggression.
Spies report that Panzerbund have been swiftly expanding so that could be partly responsible for the aliens alimentary entreaties.
Now that we have started researching again, we are building hospitals, universities and proper roads.

The slavers to the south managed to destroy our Velociraptor. I never got round to putting Glenn Kingston in charge of it. In fact I completely lack any commanders in the field whatsoever, come to think of it…
It appears from our spies' reports that we are really quite backward compared to the other empires emerging from the ruins of this planet. I have decided to establish a more permanent presence to the east, there is nothing there apart from worms, which we seem to be able to deal with if we are prepared. This is land free for the taking.

It seems that aliens are freaking people out, going around grabbing people and doing alien type things. I am really pushing for tolerance, democracy, education so for now I am encouraging the people to try to get along with them. The rest of the leaders seem to think this is a good idea. I hope we do not regret this.
Also, The Merchant Council won the elections, I think I mentioned that Skip Fluoway is their leader. He hasn’t had a job since I sacked him as governor of Earthwhite so I put him in charge of the new Interior Council. Honestly I have never seen him so happy.

The new governor of our new city of Mass Basin is a bit of a rising star.

Ok, well it’s just a village, for now, and I don’t really expect his star to rise very high, but he can certainly administrate which is just what we need.

In other news. Skip Fluoway decided to retire. Just as I got him that new job. That’s it. Finito. So we no longer have a council member in the Merchants Party, and our Interior Council lacks leadership. "Advanced age"! Pah!. Well, good luck to him.
Quitter.

More Aliens! Threatening us and requesting money – this time to the east of us. More worm attacks coming from that direction too. I suppose from their point of view it is more alien attacks coming from the west. I would actually like to be able to pay them off, but we can’t afford it, and anyway they would only spend it on… well I dunno… probably skin cream or something, by the looks of them…
Our attempts to improve relations with Panzerbund are still in limbo. Domestically we are slowly building our industrial and commercial capacity. The positivity of our initial thrust from barbarism is fading. We need a goal or our culture will stagnate.

The population of Earthwhite was devastated by a highly fatal disease last year. It has passed now. Panzerbund have been blackmailing us again. We pay them off but this cannot continue forever. On a brighter, completely unrelated note we have discovered some tech laying about – A Gravitonic Collector, Antigrav Lifter, and a Warrior Android.
We made peace with the aliens to the south-east of Mass Basin. They call themselves the Ratherar, but we know very little about them. I’ll have Rimmy Johnson send some “scientists”.

Think they'll declare war if you refuse ?

The most definite way to say you are dropping something is to say that you are not dropping something. A tale as old as time.
For what it's worth, this brief AAR was interesting. A shame you dropped it.

Weeeellll... It's been a year since I posted that, and I do still feel like I have not dropped it... but if I have a chance to get back to it I don't know when that will be.

Shadow Empire is such a deep game it rewards, and for me, needs, a commitment of time and attention which I haven't had for a year. FWIW, IRL I am currently homeless and had to drop working on the PBEM software for this game as well. This isn't intended as a hard luck story, as I am far more fortunate than many who could say they are homeless and I live in a fairly wealthy and safe-ish country, but a certain level of stability and some serious free time is helpful for this game.
Ho hum, hope I can get back to it soon, and I am still enjoying it in a way through these forums.

*edit* Not homeless any more
