Sibley into New Mexico

Post by Tanaka »

I've noticed sometimes he arrives with just his one unit of Ranger Cav and other times with his Ranger Cav and more units of infantry and cav. Is this randomness intended? If so curious why not just the historical number?

Honestly I don't get the whole West/New Mexico part of the game. It doesn't fit with the rest of the game IMO.

Well yes it was a very different theater. That's what makes it fun. I love it and that all theaters are included with this game. A dream come true.

To me it's no worse than having huge tracts of Quebec and the eastern United States represented on the map in the Strategic Command: World War I game. At least the American Civil War was fought in parts of New Mexico and Arizona. I can't recall any WWI battles fought on Baffin Island.

Sibley dying out in the desert mountains ... it's a bit fictional that he can survive out there so long but hey, it was in real life. . .

I noticed that the Texas defense event also seems to produce random troops. Correct me if I am wrong but I don't remember troop placement events being random in the other games in the series?

There's no randomness at play here. Sibley's Army (that is, the forces associated with DE 101) is always a Regiment, a Brigade and a Cav Brigade. I suspect the "extra" units are actually forces you sent to NM via the Loop near San Antonio (the timing seems to check out if you are moving the Ranger that deploys in San Antonio in August 1861 across via the Loop).

The Texas volunteers are also not random. If you accept the DE, you will receive the Magruder HQ and an infantry Brigade in Austin TX, a Cavalry Brigade in Houston TX and Fort Worth TX, and a Rangers unit in Nacogdoches TX.

Hmm maybe a bug then? On the Sibley event when I reloaded the turn only his unit arrived through the loop without the other units being placed. Another reload he arrived with the units.

Ah, think I've worked this out now - the timing of the Sibley units is randomised (40%/turn), but the specific units you get are not.

I stand by this statement, when I look up Sibley in NM it looks like the whole engagement lasted 3 months. There were also a couple "encounters" (Massacres actually) with Native Americans in the west. This whole thing is greatly exaggerated and out of place.

2500 men went and many didn't come back. Perhaps it would be more realistic as a single Brigade. Properly Supplied though maybe they could of fought which you can and you will most likely lose if the Union puts in a Division or 2 to crush it. . . Unless you also add Divisions and now Tennessee and New Orleans are vulnerable. https://www.essentialcivilwarcurriculum ... paign.html

It adds flavor?

I think it's a strategic option that yeah, in that territory would of been extremely difficult to supply. It was in other Civil War Titles(AGEOD had it) and it was possible to place a very large contingent in the region but it never really meant much. The Union would just block it as it does here. The issue for the South when she places 7 or 8 units in a far away land is now she is missing 10% of her Units that could be doing something useful. Like defending her Coastline where her own gold comes into play. You will never get Denver as the South... I mean unless you place 2 Corp there and the Union doesn't...

Victory Game's Civil War had it as an option in their board game too.

Yep...best strategic level ACW board game ever.
Also..I think the Far West is quite appropriate. The CSA can ignore this area if they want..even bluff there.
If it wasn't included, there would be folks screaming about that sheesh.
