Is there any strategy in mining stations

Post by GHerr »

To clarify this is not a question about build design. Is there any strategy to building mining stations other than mine everything? And I'm also mostly talking about once you get out of your own solar system. Like I feel in Distant Worlds universe I made decisions on where to mine but now it seems like decisions have been taken away and you just mine everything you can find. There's no real negative cost reason why you wouldn't . Which then leads me to think why bother doing it manually at all. Am I missing something. I hope I am please tell me

I didn't see a reason to not mine everything in DW1 either. The trade profit more than offset the costs in DW1. Even more so in DW2, where the private sector pays everything.

The only issue is if you are lacking certain construction resources, then you need to prioritize where to build stations. Otherwise...

If you play on a harsh start you most likely will need to be careful with your resources (esp Polymer, Carbonite, Silicon etc) and manage what gets those resources. Also, in the early game. pirates will target your mining stations so you may not want to have too many that you are protecting so they don't raid and take your money.

I start each game with Stations on manual build and then by the mid-game have this switched to automatic.

You should always focus on luxury resources first and construction resources second. The more luxury resources you get the more development your colonies have. Only build extra construction resources if there are no more luxury resources to place your mines on. Luxury resources also give you more trade income as well, so win win.

My general strategy is generally to have my constructors building mines over luxury resources all the time, I then go back and focus on construction resources when there is a need and do that on locations as close to my stations as possible.

Fur Caslon I place mines on strategic locations to support my exploration attempts first and then build up Caslon mines closer to my stations when I need more fuel later on.

Eventually you will be able to afford all the Constructors you ever need, then you can simply build mines everywhere to keep them busy. The more mines you build the more transports your civilians will build too.
