Things i learned along the way in PBEM that ended in April of '44

Post by RADM.Yamaguchi »

I just had a Scenario 2 game as Japan end in early/mid april. My opponent resigned saying something about CV and CVE loss but in reality it was more likely my inability to complete turns on a timely basis when i was ill.

This was the farthest i have gone in a PBEM and i learned a lot. Especially from my opponent who very graciously shared his years of experience and wisdom with me.

Not in any particular order:

No use trying to go into India or Australia without enough experience at the game
I think expanding HI near sources of resources helped
Once you figure out decent configurations for fuel, oil and resource task forces it becomes pretty straight forward.
If you do A/C and engine research and production correctly it can have a big impact on the game
Oscars....What are they good for? I have no idea. I managed to get the IV in early '43 but they died in droves
George... the 1st is good enough for me and getting it early helped me with allied sweeps
Frank... A is good enough for me R didn't seem much different... never got B
Nells and Sallys still worked for me even in '44..... never had any Helens.... Francis were just ok
Peggy(T) was nice to have but never seemed to work as well as Nell/Francis..... Pilot skill about the same
Chunking, i can never figure out how to take it.
Bringing a shipping engineer unit can really help an amphibious invasion
Keep an Air HQ and Nells dispersed everywhere throughout the map
Might as well park all your CAs from early/mid '43 until '44 when they get radar
Japanese DDs suck...it's only evident once you get into '43

There are probably lots of others but these were some of the more uselful/painful lessons learned

If you and your opponent both enjoyed yourselves, that was the important thing.

Players should understand about things happening in real life, sad but true.

I think that the Oscar IV is supposed to die like that, especially as cannon fodder escorts for any bomber strikes.

I also hoped that you learned things to make you a better player.

Thank you, it is good to be back.

Well, for Chungking, plan on taking a long time to reduce it. You also need to bypass and isolate but not kill as many Chinese units as possible. It would also be useful to take NE India so supplies can't flow into china that way, either by ground nor the air - that is, after cutting off the Burma Road as soon as is possible. Also, capture as many Chinese production centers as is possible. Obviously anything producing supplies but also oil/fuel and resources. While the resources are not as important, as soon as your forces move into the Chungking hex and as long as they are there, there is no local resource production so eventually the Chungking will run out of resources if you have not captured it.
