Well, the US Government would commission people as "Officers and Gentlemen" but when women were commissioned, they became gentlewomen. But that is where that phrase come from.
I am sure that the word Gentleman has been in use longer than USA has been a country. And I suspect that the term "Officer and a Gentleman" was in is use before that as well.

Regardless, I have no connection to the US Government at all, so why it matters to me how they use words eludes me.

BTW, from the looks of it I think this is "HO System"...
Thanks, Leo! You have a good eye, the layout is HO scale. 1:87 for those who aren't familiar with model railroading. My club and planned home layout are N scale, which is roughly half the size of HO at 1:160 scale.
I still have my HO stored - around 10 locomotives (oldest one from 1950's - steam engine in cast iron from US - it even spews smoke) and 40 passenger / cargo cars, 100m of rail (electrical switches included)...
