List of good customized formations

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

as per the title, is there a thread on good customized formations?

I have some ideas like:
Mechanized MG Infantry (8 infantry + 2 MGs + 10 armored transports) +
+ 6 self propelled art + 4 light tanks

(Howitzer) Light Tanks (10 light tanks) +
+ 1 self propelled art + 2 Tank destroyer + 1 buggy

Also, is there a way to add artillery to a formation without destroying its mobility?
I know you can add trucks or armored transports but then I can't use it in mountains

It's not terribly strong, but I've found various independent combinations of Motorcycle + Buggy is good for plugging holes in lines. If you don't mind slowing it down a bit, adding Light Armor or M4xMG gives it a lot more punch and lets you keep fielding those units after they'd otherwise be completely obsolete except as scouts/flankers. I really wish bikers could get personal shields when those finally become available; that would really help extend their relevance. Alas...

Indy mechanized AT + RPG is strong - and b/c it's AT + transports, you start with 8 AT + 8 APCs but can add 8 RPG + 8APCs (I REALLY don't think counting APCs for how many units you can add is intended, but reporting it never got it fixed, so...). In my current game I went (8 AT +8 APC) + (8 Mechanized Arty) + (12 RPG + 12 APC) which gives you a nice, solid block of 4800 troops that's fairly mobile but can dump some indirect fire on rough terrain it can't enter.

For OOB units, I'm really fond of adding Mech 4xMG to armored formations. My current backbone is (5 Light) + (3 MArty) + (4 M4xMG), but I've enjoyed success with 3 Medium as the second element as well. M4xMG are really nasty against infantry, and when they move from conventional MG to Gauss or Laser they get even worse.

I usually incorporate walkers into my forces by adding them to non-mechanized Heavy MG or Heavy Grenadier Infantry, which gives them a nice foot-type escort element.

Its criminal how neglected motorcycles are. I realised recently that they also dont get any move modifier at all, ever, meaning it is the motorcycles which are slowing my light armour and scout units down.
