Retreat mechanic (I'm pi$$ed)

Post by Duedman »

I just had an HQ run for 10 (!) movement points.
I really think this mechanic is not working as it should.

In other games a retreat uses up a units movement points for the following turn. And a unit can not retreat farther per single turn than the it would be able to move. Beauregard had 3 movement points and ran for 10...
The turn before a Division did the same.
I like the higher retreating probabilities but this needs to be addressed I think

I got it on tape. At some point in the future you can hear me curse on YT.

But this is because of multiple attacks, yes? Or one hit caused him to go so far?

Yes multiple attack. He ran with 2 HP to the hex 8 of Christiansburg. Which already annoyed me, because that takes 6 movement points.
Then I took the badly supplied Brigade to hit him. That made him flee to 3 of Christiansburg. Then I took the Ranger and the HQ ran to Chatham.

Wow, that yellowbelly really up and ran! That's a lot of running. I have had a Ranger evade 4 Hits of damage!

Perhaps Beauregard has been taking his cues from General Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Yeah, that definitly was a runner. Need to read up on Beauregard I guess haha

But seriously I think it should to be addressed somehow. It is a "flaw" of all the SC titles but it very rarely is a thing in the others because only ACW has these high retreat chances.

I got 3 points in my mind that could be changed:

1. Do not allow a unit to flee for more movement points than it has. One could argue that double the MP would be better since thats what a unit would do when force marching. (And what better situation to run as fast as you can as when beeing in mortal danger.)
HQs cannot force march and also should not get that ability when retreating. The guys might flee but all the equipment would be lost.

2. Make consecutive retreats impossible or limit them to 1 ( = 2 retreats)

3. Substract used movement points from the units next turn. That would have no effect in most cases since units run behind their lines and get patched up ( = no movement) anyway. But still it would be better.

And please do not get me wrong. I think in general the higher retreat chances spice things up in a good way.
But this is just too much :o

I actually like it when these Generals (and other units) unass after $h!++1n& their britches and and exceeding their movement rates. 🥁
They should lose all their experience pips (or maybe not-bad experiences can impart wisdom) or some kind of malus for saving their hides.
Perhaps there is a tweak that could be applied for cases like this. 🙂

The rebel yell had that effect on some blue bellies.
