Bugs / very stupid AI moves if you use the switching sides feature

Fury Games has now signed with Matrix Games, and we are working together on the next Strategic Command. Will use the Slitherine PBEM++ server for asynchronous multi-player.

Bugs / very stupid AI moves if you use the switching sides feature

Post by MajorHeinz »

At the moment I am playing the 39 scenario with switching sides each year. It is cool to have this feature, because AI had to do new moves, but I realized some bugs / critical AI mistakes in this game that should be corrected.
If you have left an amphibious boat in a port, the AI will never move it from there. I had not accepted Vichy-France and tried to land in Tunesia with units before switching the sides in september 40, but failed to be fast enough, because I moved the units too late to italy. So one HQ was still on a boat, as I was switching the sides. I had hided it in the port of Cagliari. As I was switching back in september 41, the boat was still lying there
Also before september 41 I had done a british unit on a amphibious boat in Palastine, but had to switch after it. After I captured this harbour with italian troops maybe eight turns later, the unit was still there in the portand I could destroy it
A nuisance is which type of cities the AI is securing. I ranted much, after switching back in september 41, because I had to spent so much money to transport much units to russia where they needed more for Barbarossa. Okay, that is the stupid historical AI. But it is critical, if the AI transports units which are securing partisan fields to secure unimportant cities
After I switched back in 42 to an axis AI, AI moved a hungarian garrison from Rostow to Rouen and doesn`t secured the city. Next turn Partisans came and blocked german supply in causcasian mountains. wtf?
In my last axis turns, I attacked Algier, but had to switch before taking the city. AI took the city and Oran became new capital of France. But instead of driving on to Oran (the city had no defender), AI stayed near Algier for several turns and only after I deployed a defender in Oran the AI moved on :? This is so silly, because two high experienced tanks are there which they would need at the moscow frontline.
Any chance to change this AI behaviour?
OT: The german AI is so silly! It is intended that it doesn`t react properly, if their supply routes are cutted? It is so easy to do it. I had done it at the Onegasee. But AI didn`t turned back for several turns and so could not move on to Archangelsk because of bad supplies. In the caucasian mountains I just needed a paratrooper which flew to a city to block german supply. The AI is still attacking the defending soviets and doesn`t care much about the cutted supply routes (they have still some supply thropugh a double HQ and the Astrachan line, but they have left the city undefended and I can take it possibly).

Hi MajorHeinz,

AI Transports should be unloading if they have no plans, this is likely a bug that we can look into, and for the rest I can just say that it might be simply throwing the AI off a bit too much when switching sides, as often as you are, and when the AI is picking things up where it otherwise differs greatly from what the AI is scripted to be typically doing at that time and place.

For example, if the current map differs too much from what the AI normally plans by default, it is likely to have a bit of a hard time picking up from there as it didn't put itself into that situation in the first place. Essentially the AI is fine tuned per side and while switching sides is certainly a viable option, it is possible depending on the situation, that it will just not play out as ideally as it would if sides were not switched etc.

Hope this helps,
Hubert

That`s a pity that the AI is overwhelmed when using this features. Because it could be an excellent feature to learn the game better if the AI would act smart. It would be not that hard as playing against a human, but in bringing the AI in new situations, would confront the player with new situations that he must solve, if the AI would react properly. I think that`s my only problem with the game. It makes a lot of fun, but the AI is very linear and always makes the same, so it become repetitive after a while. And it is hard to find a human opponent with a similar level.
But its okay and I understand that this can be hard for the AI. It was just frustrating. I had left the AI in an excellent situation with the axis in september 42 with already conquered Leningrad and Stalingrad and standing in front of Moscow. But the AI totally messed it up. The AI let the units be cutted off, encircled, moved a lot of units in supply 0 terrain and had everywhere bad supplies. After I switched back to the axis, the situation of them were critical. And for me it looked like the AI disadvantaged the axis, because such mistakes it didn`t made with the allied. But today allied AI made D-Day. AI landed a lot of infantry troops and two tanks, but until now no HQ. All landed troops have a very bad supply. At least the AI seems to be stupid on both sides when you use the switching sides feature, so the game seems to be still balanced
btw. Sometimes when a carrier is attacking me and one of fighter shoots back there is a 254 (or 274 I am not really sure) displayed as loss of the carrier. This seems to be a bug, because I really doubt that the carrier has lost 254 strenght points.

Speaking of wtha AI can do or would do: Will the AI ever try a invasion of Great Britain? At the moment that is the most important question because it depends how I will go on with my 39er scenario.

The AI may attempt a Sea Lion, it depends on the circumstance, so I would factor in that possibility.
