How many planes?

Post by Metacortex »

Hello,

I have been playing WITP: AE for several months and for the first time I am able to slow down the progress of the Japanese in the Pacific.

My question is: how many planes do the Japanese have? In 4 months of war they lost more than 1934 aircraft.

Wait until it climbs to almost 30,000. In games that have dragged into 1944, I've seen some rather staggering Japanese aircraft losses. Japan built 2,435 G4M bombers in the war. My Allies have killed twice that many at least. I have a suspicion that the AI gets a little help in the production department.

If you are playing with Fog of War On, then those enemy loss numbers are inflated.

The short answer is that the Japanese start with around 4000 aircraft. In the 3 months and one week of war you are showing they could have added another 400 (just a guess). Their real Achilles heel is the pilots - they can run out of experienced pilots in the first year and your pilots will gain ascendency. Japan never seems to run out of aircraft.

AI never runs out of planes. As said, it does run out of experienced pilots and then you start really killing IJAAF/IJNAF planes.

Just for comparison, here are aircraft losses when playing as Japan against the Allied AI in a game which ended at the end of 1942. All subject to FOW, but he losses are not quite as dramatic. Probably a testament to the superior durability of Allied planes. The G4M Betty is still the loss leader for Japan, but I tried to be more circumspect in their use than the AI. What's notable is how few Allied planes fall to flak, but a lot get lost or captured on the ground or sink on carriers at sea.

With the AI constantly flying in unescorted bombers they have to have that many planes.

Would seem to make bombing Japanese AI aircraft and engine factories rather redundant other than for victory points.

You might be right in that sentiment.
