Why was abandoned ship repaired by player given to a different race?

Why was a ship "Eternal Inquisitor" in "Murilea 2 Debris Field", inside my race influence border, see screeny, repaired by my race's construction ship, then given by the game, on completion by me and investigation by me, to a different neighbouring race which was also working the same field whose ships just happened to be in the same location?

If I had known it would go to another race I would not have bothered repairing it.

Is this a bug, if not what are the rules governing this miserable injustice?

Interesting, though it sounds like there is something not quite right about that code determining ownership if that is happening.

Definitely agree that whoever finishes repairing it gets to claim it.

Meanwhile the in-game editor is your friend.
