Where are my destroyers and commander names?

I'm returning to this wonderful game after a few years away. I'm in the first year of the war playing as Allies. So far I do not have the option of buying badly needed destroyers for Britain. They don't appear on my purchase list. Is it possible that they will later or do I have to research something to get them? I've played this before but don't remember.

Also no commander names. Didn't I used to have them?

This doesn't sound right, there should be HQ names listed in the Purchase screen for you to buy, and Destroyers should be available too.

Perhaps try uninstalling and reinstalling, being sure to upgrade to the latest version too?

Assuming of course that you are playing one of the six official campaigns that come with the game. You can always post a screenshot of the relevant purchase screens.
