Game without a name - Uncivil Engineer (J) vs. krishub1492 (A)

Post by Uncivil Engineer »

No, Kris, you can't read this!!

This is a new DDB-C game against a different opponent. It's historical start with the usual house rules (nothing too restrictive). I plan to try a different approach to aircraft production. If I can last long enough for it to pay off!

The D4Y3 Judy will be the first replacement for the D3A1 Val. Scheduled for delivery in Aug '44, six R&D sites will accelerate that as much as possible. The Aichi Ha-60 engine is therefore not needed but will be researched so that a few can be produced, then switched to something else, like the Mitsubishi Ha-32 and Ha-33 to get the engine bonus.

The B6N2 Jill will be the first replacement for the B5N2 Kate. Scheduled for delivery in Nov '44, six R&D sites will accelerate it as much as possible. B5N1 Kates will be built from Dec 8 to use up the 99 Nakajima Hikari engines in inventory, as well as the B5N2 Kate.

Seven sites will research the A6M2-N Rufe and six of them will convert to the A6M5 Zero (and A6M5 c Zero) while only one produces the Rufe.

Seven sites will research the A7M2 Sam and six sites will research the Ki-83 Army fighter, both due in '45.

Five sites will research the Ki-44-II a Tojo for delivery in mid-'42. Four sites will research the armored Ki-43-II a Oscar (maybe a poor choice), but they can be used in China to replace the Nates.

Six sites will research the Ki-84 a Frank and N1K1-J George. With the engine bonus I anticipate the George becoming available the first quarter of '43. Two sites will research the P1Y1 Frances, the B7A2 Grace, and the Ki-67-I a(T) Peggy.

A word about the "strategery" for this endeavor:

1. The invasion of Luzon will be "light"; only 16 Div and 65 Bde will go in. Other places are more important. This may give the Allies more of an opportunity to entrench, but that won't do them much good when they have no supply.

2. The main attack in China will be up the major road into Sian.

3. Mersing will be invaded soon. A whole bunch of stuff gets dropped in Singora, Patani, and Kota Bharu during the first week, including the Imperial Guard Div coming down by rail from Bangkok. That division will likely lead the assault on Mersing, along with tanks, engineers, and aviation support. The 3rd Air Division will be in Kota Bharu soon, and with its control radius of 4, all bases in northern Malaya will have torpedoes available.

Logistics: Five bases have started to increase their repair shipyards - Hakodate, Tokyo, Naha, Saigon, and Pescadores. All bases involved in production/R&D of engines and aircraft have had their supplies dialed up to over 10k. All will be increased to 30(0) or 0(30) over the next week (except the base that starts with 0(55) Franks).

Bases captured today: Makin (vacant), Kota Bharu, and Aparri (vacant; captured by paradrop).

The Zero sweep of Manila downed 17 Warhawks for loss of 2 Zeroes. But otherwise, the bombing of Manila by Betties and Nells was somewhat ineffective, resulting in only minor runway damage. Likewise, the bombing of the Allied troops at Hong Kong did little.

A Dutch sub tried to interfere with unloading at Kota Bharu and took 9 hits; it's reported sunk.

The Japanese subs that put mines in Singapore port yesterday went up the Malacca Strait and reportedly sank a small xAKL. CVL Ryujo's Kates also sank an xAKL off Samar. And I-153 sank an xAKL off Mersing.

21 Air Flotilla HQ is being shipped from Takao to Babeldaob to allow Netties to base there with torpedoes.

Elements of 2 Div are being shipped to Paramushiro for later action in the Aleutians.

4 Div has loaded tranports at Osaka and is headed toward Mindanao.

Dec 9,1941

Bases captured today: Tarawa (vacant)

I-124, on the surface, sank an xAKL near Iba; I-15 sank a tanker near Hilo with 2 torpedoes (confirmed by email intel).

The CL Nagara TF leading amphibs into southern Luzon encountered and sank 3 transports; CVL Ryujo's Kates sank 2 xAKL in the same area running east from the Philippines.

A fighter sweep of Manila downed 5 Warhawks and 2 P-35s with no loss of Zeroes.

Two British destroyers, having left Hong Kong at the outbreak of war, entered Cam Ranh Bay harbor and ripped up an amphib TF from Samah carrying 2 Fleet HQ. Three transports sank and two others sank later after discharging their passengers. Nells from Saigon found the pair, put a torpedo in DD Thanet, and sank her.

B-17s bombed Babeldaob but had no hits.

Weather scrubbed many air missions in the AM. A 2 BB TF enroute to support the coming amphib assault on Luzon, encountered a lone xAK in the Philippine Sea and sank it.

Ineffective bombing of Manila's port and airfield by Betties and Nells continued; as did bombing of the Allied ground troops at Hong Kong by 1- and 2-engine bombers.

Three attacks in China occurred at the yellow circles (the arrows show the direction of the Chinese retreat) -

Bases assaulted today: Guam, Balabac, Aitape, Kudat, and Sandakan

Bases captured today: Laoag (vacant), Jesselton, and Victoria Point

The fighter sweep of Manila downed 3 Allied fighters, but no Warhawks rose to contest the sweep. Betties on a port mission over Manila sank a tanker.

Ryujo's Kates, using bombs as the torpedoes have been expended, started fires on 2 small transports. CVL Zuiho will join Ryujo soon and has a full complement of torpedoes.

A deliberate attack at Hong Kong reduced the Allies' defensive forts to 1.

Today she was attacked again by Skipjack, which missed, but the ship sank before reaching port only 46 miles away.

CVL Zuiho joined CVL Ryujo north of Babeldaob, and both continued to harass the small merchants fleeing east from the Philippines. None were sunk, but they're burning brightly.

Two subs fired at a US tanker near San Diego but missed. But another sub sank a lone AG some 200 miles SW of Hilo.

Hong Kong was swept of mines. And no CAP was found over Clark Field by the Zero fighter sweep. One third of the sweep squadron is being moved to Aparri from Takao and given a naval attack mission at 100 feet. Several groupings of PT boats have been sited at Lingayen and elsewhere around Luzon.

Bases assaulted today: Kuching, Kuantan, and Puerto Princessa

Bases captured today: Kavieng (vacant), Baler (vacant), Chuhsien (vacant, RES 20(0))

North of Mindanao in some minor engagements the CL Nagara TF sank a lone xAKL near Surigao and our BB TF attacked 3 MTBs at Butuan, sinking one. Then Nagara got a second, and later Zeroes flying from the newly acquired airfield at Cagayan nailed the third.

Our first serious surface naval engagement of the war occurred NW of Kuching when an Allied light cruiser TF engaged our heavy cruiser TF covering the landings at Kuching -

Image

Over at Kavieng KB arrived to provide LRCAP over our assault ships, and downed 4 SB2U. None got through.

In Malaya, the British/Indian battalion given the "speed bump" mission on the west coast, was destroyed south of Taiping.

Bases captured today: Butuan, Loyang (LI 15(5), RES 29(11)), Singkawang, Kuching, Kuantan, Talaud-eilanden (vacant), Catbalogen (vacant, RES 16(4)), and Oroquieta

I-20 put 3 torpedoes into an xAK at Pago Pago and I-4 put a torpedo in an xAK near San Diego; both are reported sunk. But the Dutch subs had success as well - KXIII sank xAP Brazil Maru (20 VP) at Mersing and put a torpedo in an xAK. Japanese LRCAP over Mersing was insufficient and Vildebeest sank two xAK there (23 VP). Needless to say the Imperial Guard Div did not land at full strength.

Zeroes on Luzon sank an MTB at Iba and damaged PT boats at both Lingayen and Subic Bay. Major elements of 16 Div advanced into Batangas, just south of Manila.

Bases assaulted today: Rabaul

Bases captured today: Dumanquilas (flipped), Batangas, Mersing, Ulan Melintang (vacant), and Taytay (vacant)

The capture of Dumanquilas cuts the retreat route for any Allied units defending Zamboanga, thus ensuring their surrender when attacked. I had intended to capture it by paradrop from Naga, but that's no longer necessary. Likewise, the capture of Taytay cuts the retreat route for the Philippine battalion at Puerto Princessa.

Two MTBs at Lingayen attacked our TF (CL and 6 DDs) at San Fernando losing one MTB. I'm not sure if this was intentional or a one hex reaction move by the local MTB commander.

The BB TF (Kongo and Haruna) covering the landing at Mersing moved south to cover the coming landing at Palembang. Enroute it ran into 3 burning British ships (CL and 2 DD) from the naval battle on the 18th and sank all but DD Scout. Speaking of Mersing - this day we did a better job of assigning LRCAP to cover the landing - at least 12 Vildebeest were shot down and only 1 friendly transport was hit, none sunk.

Far away at Pago Pago submarine I-168 put 3 torpedoes into an xAK and sank it.

This map is prior to the Dec 21 turn -

Bases assaulted today: Adak

Bases captured today: Amchitka (vacant) and Kuala Lumpur

One of our heavy cruiser TFs bombarded Palembang in support of the first ground attack. The transport TF finished unloading and swept some mines before retiring. The 1:1 ground attack reduced forts from 2 to 1.

Zeroes sank a PT boat at Bataan.

Meanwhile, in Central China the advance to Sian continues. Eleven divisions and at least 5 tank regiments in 1st and 12th Armies are advancing on the objective.

Bases assaulted today: Tawau and Zamboanga

Bases captured today: Kwangchowan (flipped, LI 20(0)), Nanyang (vacant, RES 20(0)), Temuloh, and Adak (vacant)

Minesweepers cleared Mersing harbor.
SS Sargo put 1 torpedo into an xAK near Nagasaki.
Our San Fernando-based cruiser TF sank the last MTB at Iba. Zeroes sank PT boats at Bataan and Manila.
I-172 put 2 torpedoes into an xAP at Canton Is. and it's reported sunk.

As can be seen on the preceding map of Central China, several Chinese Corps are in the process of being surrounded and destroyed. And the main attack from Nanyang to Sian is developing.
