Re: Queen Elizabet II
I appreciate the thought guys.
When she was 25, Sir Winston Churchill gave her some advice: "Stay close to the Americans." As shown below, she did just that.
In what became known as the Talking Hat incident, the Queen spoke after who we refer to as Bush41. Unfortunately, no one pulled out the step in the lecturn after Bush's welcoming remarks. So when she walked to it to speak, all you could really see was her hat bobbing up and down
Addressing a joint session of Congress she quipped "I do hope you can see me from where you are."
George W Bush during a state visit to the White House "The American people are proud to welcome your majesty back to the United States, a nation you’ve come to know very well,” he said. “After all, you’ve dined with 10 U.S. presidents. You’ve helped our nation celebrate its bicentennial in 17…”
Realizing his blunder, he quickly corrected himself. “In 1976,” he said.
Bush awkwardly glanced over at the Queen, who didn’t seem amused. “She gave me a look that only a mother could give a child,” he said as the crowd roared.
At a formal dinner at the British ambassador’s residence later that night, the Queen poked fun of Bush’s blunder during her formal toast to the president. Grinning, she joked, “I wondered whether I should start this toast by saying, 'When I was here in 1776...'"
When visiting the White House in 1976, a chance meeting between the royal couple and the Ford's middle son caused an uncomfortable moment for Betty Ford. Jack wasn't exactly dressed for the occasion. Betty Ford was mortified.
The Queen, however, wasn’t fazed.
"The Queen said, "Oh think nothing of it. I have one of those at home
A great sense of humor.

Not disappointed at all
I have no idea what you mean. I am not Swedish, but Danish. I was going to reply to your second post earlier, but something came up. I do remember the accounts of her incidents with the various Presidents she met, particularly the gaffes and slip ups where her quick wit shown through to make a funny retort.Aurelian wrote: Tue Sep 13, 2022 10:20 pm I appreciate the thought guys.

She shared a love of horses with Ronald Reagan and as the two were scheduled to go out for a ride at Reagan's California ranch it was prevented by a rain storm where the Queen quipped: “I knew before we came that we had exported many of our traditions to the United States. But I had not realized before that weather was one of them.”
She followed Churchill's advice, and is probably the most important factor in establishing the strong bonds that exist between both the UK and US. A bond that is mutually important for our nations on so many levels.
She will be missed by this American!

Rico I have always thought you odd but your comments in this thread are uncalled for and just way off. Her late Majesty had nothing to do with politics. You have to go back to Charles 1st for the monarchy to have political power now they may do abit of diplomacy but really have no real power either here or globally.rico21 wrote: Mon Sep 12, 2022 1:27 pmI do not agree with you.Erik Rutins wrote: Mon Sep 12, 2022 12:58 pmThreads memorializing someone who has died are not inherently political and it's also in poor taste to jump into such threads with this kind of comment. And as a Frenchman, I don't know what a king is for.
Queen Elizabeth was well-respected and well-known worldwide and it's not surprising at all or political for some to wish to express their sentiments or condolences here. I would also agree that as a public figure she tried and largely succeeded in being above politics. You don't have to share in that sentiment, but common courtesy would be that in such instances if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

If you think my comment is political then cut to the chase and exclude me.

As a Texan, I will never forget her comment during a 1991 visit:
"No state commands such fierce pride and loyalty," Queen Elizabeth II said. "Lesser mortals are pitied for the misfortune in not being born Texan."
Gotta love it.

Re: Queen Elizabet II
Hi gamer78,
However, we've always tried to keep this forum away from politics.
When a subject comes up that's political for you, whether with regards to NATO and Sweden/Finland or with regard to Queen Elizabeth, realize that it may not be inherently political for all or to the same degree. We try to draw a pretty large border around political topics, but we also know that our forum is populated by adults who should be able to give some benefit of the doubt to their fellow posters in the interest of discussing topics that could be political, but don't have to be.
A memorial thread such as this is a good example of that. I realize that Queen Elizabeth was a head of state and thus a political figure. However, she was also a public figure worldwide and this thread was intended as a place for those who simply wanted to express their condolences or wishes that she rest in peace. It has no agenda beyond that. It doesn't have to be political, unless you make it so.
In any case, given your recent posts (most now deleted by you), I've asked Edmon to give you a one week ban to think things over. As you've already been warned a couple of times, this is the next step in terms of our forum moderation rules.
We don't want you to leave the forum for good, we'd just like you to reconsider what's bothering you and the rules of the forum. You've been a welcome member here for many years and that can also be the case for years to come. I've posted this publicly to make sure there's no misunderstanding here and that you can see this even while temporarily banned.
Regards,
- Erik
You've been a valued and constructive member of this community for years, but since the post you made regarding NATO and the warning you received about that for bringing politics into that discussion, it seems that you've been carrying a grudge. There have been a series of posts since then where you keep trying to send threads off-topic or bring politics into them. We all have political viewpoints and I certainly appreciate that yours may differ from mine and that you are entitled to your own opinions.gamer78 wrote: Tue Sep 13, 2022 9:53 pm Edmond sure go for it. Not sure if that's supposed to be sarcastic or what, but she put her faith and trust in Jesus as her Savior and Billy Graham, who knew her well, spoke a number of times about her Christian commitment.
That's an endorsement I'm good with.

Mrs warspite1 and I paid our respects last night. We started queuing at 4:30 (at that time the queue length was over 4 miles) and about 8 hours later we started the journey home. We were lucky with the weather, no rain and not cold, even around midnight. We are so pleased that we did this and got to pay our respects to this wonderful lady. I hear the queue is up to 11 hours and over 5 miles - but its worth it.
For their incredible uniforms, I was hoping the Blues and Royals and Lifeguards would be on watch - and they were. We also got to witness a change over of the watch which meant more time in Westminster Hall with Her Majesty.
If you get the chance to do this I would thoroughly recommend it.... just take plenty of food and drink!!

As an American, watching that video was fascinating, you have to admire and respect all the British folks that were both so gentlemanly and gentlewomanly, polite, respectively of one another and at the same time so caring and sadden by the loss of their Queen (mother as one Lady put it).
You British showed how gracious and how much of impact your Queen had on you and the mark she left upon you.
I wish you all the best blessings and comfort.
May your new King lead you as well as his mother.

Re: Queen Elizabet II
I'm late weighing in but I'd like to mention something that hasn't been addressed.
Elizabeth was more than just a nice person, more than just the Queen. She represented the British nation, which has been the most supportive ally of my country, the United States, since World War I. As Britain's representative, Elizabeth deserved the respect of every American, as does the new sovereign, Charles.
RIP Queen Elizabeth.

In the UK when you turn 100 you get a letter from the Queen.
When you're 13 you get a text from prince Andrew.

I was 8 years old when she had her Coronation and I vividly remember watching it on TV at the time. It is one of the few memories I have from that age remaining. (Please don't do the math).
I am so sorry for your loss.
