I believe you can see 15 hexes witout a scanner, with your scanner on I think it's just line of sight
Ok, you run across that open field to draw their fire, then I'll snipe them when they show themselves...

If you mean how far away a pilot can see a MECH then I think its a more complicated answer related to the HD score and influenced by (i) mech size/height; (ii) cover provided by a hex; (iii) active scanning of a hiding mech; (iv) attacks from a hiding mech; (v) ecm capability of hiding mech; (vi) scanner skill/capability to searching mech; (vii) the factor(s) I've forgotten lol.

I apologize for off-topic-ness if you're just referring to viewing the surrounding terrain. [:)]

I guess what I mean is what is the number of hexes that the pilot can see into. I'm going to open the editor when I get back to my pc and find out I guess.

Scanners have 2 sets of ranges. Up to optimum range, and between optimum and maximum. The latter will give you only basic info (same as visual, the 15 hexes already mentioned), and the former more details.
As for spotting titans, those ranges are modified by the total HD for the titan + hex (shown in the first status page, top), for more details you should check the guide. The mods are many, and the calculation not too simple. Bottom line, HD=1.0 means no hiding, the lower the HD the better the unit is hidden (or the more hidden it can be if you consider the HD in the hex info for cover hexes).

To make sure I understand this, The pilots Line of Sight extends to the scanners max range, correct? ie scanner 3 = 26(?) hexes.

You mean 25 (new) or 28 (old)? Yep.
BTW, the updated fvars.dat file is now missing, with the forum hack...

edit: scanner damage will reduce both opt/max ranges. Minimum is always visual (15).

Larkin released a new version of the file with the definitions of all equipment, with changed stats for scanners (ranges, VH). They now increase linearly with the scanner quality (13/23, 14/24... ; 7m, 8m,...).
I think it should be Larkin to decide if he releases it again now or wait for the next patch.
Not very important anyway.

edit: I mean, it's important, I've been wanting that for a long time, it's just not crippling and can wait [:D] Sorry if it sounded bad...

OIC. I been away from the internet since the middle of January, so I missed a bit.

Would have been nice to have though.

Anyone willing to send it to me via email? xcorp200@bellsouth.net
