"Set Static" - Opinions

Post by ITAKLinus »

Hi everyone,

In my current PBEM, we've finally reached 1942 and, thus, the option to set units static has been enabled.

Since I'm not swimming in trucks, I've set static a decent line of regiments defending south of Lake Ilmen, with a couple more left mobile to act as reserve in second line. I have something around 11.000 trucks in pool.

However, I do wonder: is setting units static worth? Am I missing something about the mechanism?

Basically, for a couple of hundred of trucks, I've made my units in the area almost immobile; considering the insane amount of trucks running all around the map, does it make sense to have those few hundreds saved? Even two thousands trucks wouldn't do much of a difference in the big picture, afterall!

I am not convinced, so I do ask: what's the general consensus about the practice?

I dont use it. The benefits from it are not big enough to outweigh the cost (becoming completely immobile). You want your units to be as mobile as possible both in case you need to put pressure on a front and also to be flexible if the Soviets attack a certain sector. If my truck situation is really really bad then I will consider it though.

Thanks for the reply!

I have you very same feelings, so I suppose I won't indulge in it. Let's see if someone else comes in with a different view on the subject!

The main benefit is probably the AP gain, not the trucks. If you need a few APs in a hurry you can just temporarily set some units to static, and revert them in later turns when you're less constrained. It could be really handy in a tight situation, e.g. if you have some infantry in enemy ZOC lock and would like to temporarily motorize it to get it out.
