Xargun complained that weather restricted his strike. I do not see the enemy messages about aircraft not finding the
target or returning because of weather

BB Mississippi is only slightly damaged and cam still make 30 knots and will exit the area.
BB New Mexico sustained more damage and can only make 22 knots and DD Eaton is also moderately damaged and
can make 25 knots. They are moving at full speed( 6 hexes per phase) out of the area.

The DS will make a full speed run to see if they can get into the area and close enough to attack KB. It depends on
what Xargun does.

June 17, 1943

The 1st Marine Raiders landed and took Ailuk in the Marshall Islands.

Bombing continues in the Marshall Islands.

Our DS did not get close enough to launch an attack, but they are undetected.
The KB moved about 5 hexes to the East and is a few hexes West of Merauke.
The DS will move closer and try to engage, I also have a motley group of CAs/CLs, and DDs at
Port Moresby that is now set to follow the DS. They will provide some additional AA and targets.

I would like to be able to engage KB at this location, I am in range of multiple bases with at
least size 1 airfields so my aircraft can divert there if necessary and he has no bases in range to
do the same. I am always trying to whittle down his IJN pilot numbers.

I had one of my LCUs on Reserve status with pursuit so the adjusted Av is not as bad as it looks.
The enemy unit retreated to the NW, Japan has control of Ansi at this time and that is the direction it went.
My pursuit unit moved 19 miles to the hex so it should be able to get there before the enemy moves out.
If all goes well I should have control of Ansi by then and I am not sure the unit will have any valid supply
path to retreat to.
SE of Hami I have caught up with 3 enemy units two hexes outside of Hami. I am going to only bombard for this
turn to see what I am facing. I have a unit continuing to move East on the road from Kiuchuan to the road junction
and try and cut the retreat path of the units North of that road junction.

More bombing of troops in the Marshall Islands. I have many of my bombers stood down to allow the ground crews
to repair them and bring the aircraft fatigue down.

KB decided to withdraw for this turn. I will keep my DS on station for a few turns to see if he returns
I might send a small transport TF to Gove to try and provoke him.

In the Marshall Islands, the 1st USMC Paratroop Bn landed and took Ebadon. That only leaves Wake,
Roi-Namur, and Kwajalein Island to be taken and they will take a bit.

My first unit finally got to Hami and will start to build forts. I am hopeful that I will be able to hold Hami long
enough to close the roads behind the enemy units and run them out of supply.
There seems to be 3 tank units and an Infantry Division. I have about 2000 AV moving to the area and about the
same amount in the area now. These are not your usual weak Chinese Corps, most of them have their full allotment of
12 37mm AT guns and 12 of either 75mm or 105mm guns.

My TFs were supposed to exit to Chittagong, but instead they ended up going to Akyab, where I had no
fighter cover. I suppose that most of them were stripped off into escort TFs and routed to the nearest
bae, which was Akyab. Bad planning on my part, I should have had some CAP up over Akyab, but I didn't.
And then an endless stream of Betty/Nell bombers hit most of the survivors

Add to that DD Jupiter is 4 hexes SW of Akyab with extensive damage
And of course SS Trusty, which might make it back to a port, but with 85(52) float damage and 35 sys damage
it will be close. I have 75 P-47D2s on CAP over Akyab, they might be able to guard to port, but I doubt it.

CL Birmingham along with DDs Van Galen, Tjerk Hiddes and Stronghold are able to make a full speed run back to Calcutta, they have very minor damage.
On paper this should have been a victory for me, but this did me in

Reduced visibility due to Thunderstorms with 35% moonlight
Maximum visibility in Thunderstorms and 35% moonlight: 2,000 yards

This meant the fight started at 1000 yards and his torpedoes were murder. Notice that in the
daylight fight I sank two ships and suffered no hits at all.

Meanwhile in the Marshall Islands, normal activity, naval bombardment of Roi-Namur and air
bombing of both Roi-Namur and Kwajalein.

And I do get to report that SS Truant has made it safely back to Calcutta and is in the repair shipyard there.
I am not sure if I reported it before, but SS S-36 has made it to Rabaul and is now repairing there.

A further note on last turn.

When I make my plans I do try to envision all that can go wrong. It is painfully obvious that I did not do that
last turn. I do remember thinking I should put CAP up over Akyab since that was near where I expected the combat
to occur if I did indeed get an engagement. But I didn't, and having even 50-75 fighters up over Akyab would have
protected my ships to a great extent and shot down a good number of IJN bombers.

So, a really boneheaded turn by me, unfortunately it happens, we all make mistakes, this one cost some, but in the
long run, not a huge problem. I usually consider the CBI theater to be somewhat of a backwater, an area to put some
pressure on my opponent but not the main event by any means. That is my usual thinking, it doesn't mean I will not
make it a high priority in some game.

June 27, 1943

Pleasantly surprised. Xargun did not attack the port at Akyab, so all ships repaired some float damage.
DD Jupiter did not sink yet, she moved 1 hex closer to Akyab. It would appear that she was under a weather
cloud. She did not sustain any new damage.

SS Trusty did not sink and sustained no new damage, in fact she repaired one point of float damage.

It would now appear that all enemy are eliminated from Kwajalein Island, the 1st Marine Raider Bn will be
moved via a FT TF and take possession of the base. My minesweeper TF at Roi-Namur located a mine field
and will sweep it along with friend dispatched from Ailinglaplap.

Xargun did try to bomb the port at Akyab. He got two 250kb bomb hits, one each on two different CAs. But he paid a high price in aircraft losses.
I am sure he will complain about his sweepers arriving after the bombers. It happens, and it has happened to me more than once in this game.

Here are the losses
I lost 7 USAAF pilots and 1 RAF pilot, I am sure he lost many more than that.
I can handle a 6.6:1 loss ratio

CA Dorsetshire got 28 more sys damage but repaired 5 float damage
CA Devonshire gained 6 sys damage and 5 float damage.
Neither are in any danger at this time.
DD Jupiter was not attacked today, she moved one hex closer to Akyab and is now only two hexes away.
She repaired 1 float damage.


Kwajalein flipped Allied control.

Today does help a bit from the results of two days ago.

I doubt DD Converse will make it. I hate the rule that a SCTF must close to visual range before opening fire
can really suck for the Allies. My radar detected the enemy at 24,000 yards yet had to approach to 2,000 yards
to fire. That puts them in dire torpedo range.

Just air bombing in the Marshall Islands. Roi-Namur is showing 20 troops left.

Some days ago I got a sigint of Radio Transmissions at hex 137,62. This is in the middle of nowhere in the
Northern pacific. So I dispatched a 6" gun armed sub to check it out, knowing that Xargun likes to put
xAKLs out as pickets.
