Question about Vladivostock Sub Blockade

Post by Tanaka »

In my current MP game Russia declared war on me as Japan. I then immediately placed a BB on the Vladivostok blockade hex. Ended turn but no damage to port. Do I need to wait another turn for this to fire or is something off here?

It will reduce the "worth of the invisible convoy" from 80 to 50, not damage the port.
PS:
You can place a ship there as soon as Russia is at war with Germany, no need to wait for Russia vs Jap war.
PPS:
If you put a ship there the Russians will get a DE to pay a one time sum and then do continuous damage to your ship (but not completely destroy it), so don't put a BB there but something cheaper.

Ok gotcha. Does this damage still happen if Russia declares war on you first?

Whoever declares war on whom would not affect things here.

Correct. Next turn my battleship suffered the damage. Lesson learned. Will an submerged sub avoid the damage and prevent the MPP's? Curious why does the hex not damage the port like all other red striped hexes with enemy ships on them? I got the message Axis vessels are damaged by the Soviets but nothing about me preventing MPP's? Seems like it is just better to avoid than to keep getting damaged ships and no confirmation of destroyed MPP's...

Any naval unit will trigger the events, and they just affect the convoy income and Axis naval strength, it keeps the scripting a lot simpler that way!

Red stripes basically mean that you can trigger some kind of little event on these hexes, damage to the port is just the most common of those (and wouldn't make sense here).
If you want the exact details, just start a hotseat vs yourself and let the Reich declare war on Russia on turn one. That should trigger the DE chain, and you can examine it from both sides.
I think there's also something about it in the strategy guide.
Btw, the damage stops once your ship is down to str 1, so putting a DD there is well worth it in the long run.
