Shoot first or wait till fired upon?

Post by TBLackey »

The orders are to sail into waters contested by PLAN.

Also, do not fire unless fired upon.

Getting fired upon is inevitable, because of where my forces are going.

If I keep sailing where I'm going, and the PLAN fires first, some of my sailors are going to die.

Given the situation and the orders, what would a professional USN commander do? Follow the orders to the letter, or use their discretion to shoot first?

Its not Politically correct to fire first

True, but as the commander of a Carrier Strike Group would I be sacked for doing so?

A Commander would have a multitude of ROE to use one of those is self defence using Warning calls at set ranges dependant on type of platform, ie know what the platform is, what weapons it carries and there weapon release ranges min and max etc

I think you would not only be sacked but placed in Leavenworth for violating article 92 and potentially starting world war 3. From a political perspective you would be leading a CAG into waters off the coast of China and attacking them for being there. It would be a really big deal and paints a really negative picture for the other forward deployed forces around the world. So ya, no real captain or commodore would do it.

Speaking of 'shooting first' my ASW assets keep dropping torpedoes on PLAN subs even with ROE set to 'hold'.

Any ideas what's going on?

Whats everyone's approach?

When does China initiate hostilities? I waited a few hours, nothing happened, then spotted some subs beelineing towards my CVBG and decided to escalate the situation and ordered an attack.

Is this how it is supposed to go do down? Should I have waited? If an SS parks right next to your CV I think that no sane commander would allow that that to happen.
