In the hex between Ramree Island and Prome

Ground combat at 54,49 (near Prome)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 22287 troops, 475 guns, 657 vehicles, Assault Value = 1707

Defending force 11961 troops, 169 guns, 44 vehicles, Assault Value = 228

Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 7 disabled

Guns lost 8 (1 destroyed, 7 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
305 casualties reported
Squads: 10 destroyed, 7 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 30 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Vehicles lost 50 (1 destroyed, 49 disabled)

Assaulting units:

6th Heavy AA Regiment
26th Indian Mountain Gun Regiment
21st Indian Mountain Gun Regiment
RAF 225 Group Base Force

Defending units:
5th Guards Division
17th Indpt Guards Regiment
This combat is not as bad as it might seem in the CR. Most of these units just arrived during this turn and did not
participate in the combat. The only participants were the 5th Indian division, the 7th Armoured Brigade, and the 3rd Carabiniers Regiment.
So tomorrows combat should be more on my side, if he doesn't escape the hex

I swept Prome since it showed a number of fighters, but my sweepers met no opposition. I will sweep and bomb the airfield tomorrow.

Defending units:
3rd Tank Division
I was surprised that his unit retreated to the NE. I guess that is because the hex it retreated to has a major road
and the hex to the direct East only has a minor road. That would probably be a shorter supply line, which is quite long.
My units are low on supply and will stay in the hex for a turn or two to try and pull some in.

I sent bombers to bomb the units in Prome preceded with sweeps, at least that was the plan. Most of the sweeps were late, in the
afternoon and many of the bombers did not fly a mission at all. I set all the bombers down and just sent the sweepers for tomorrow.

Pretty quiet turn. I swept Prome, met no resistance. I thought he might cap from Rabaul.
I will sweep Rabaul next turn.

I swept Toungoo again today, no opposition. Tomorrow I will sweep and bomb and attempt to close the airfield.

In the hex SE of Liuchow Xargun swept the hex. My Chinese P-66 Vanguard fighters took on his A6M2 Zero fighters.
The outcome was a 2:1 victory for the Chinese. ;) I am always happen to shoot down IJN aircraft.
8 Zeros shot down for 4 Vanguards and I only lost 1 pilot.

A small amount of bombing elsewhere, nothing much.

while I lost 8 P-47D2 Thunderbolts( all air-2-air) and 2 P-38E Lightning ( all air-2-air). 23 to 10 losses and my airframe losses were older models and
I lost 5 pilots, not a bad day in the air for me. ( I just started getting the superior P-47D25 this turn )

My air strikes against Toungoo were all scrubbed because of weather.

certainly some of the sunk ships had float planes.
I lost 19 aircraft total, 9 Corsair IIs ( 6 air-2-air and 3 ops), 4 Wellington Ics ( 1 flak and 3 ops ) and a few more ops

Grand total is 109 losses for Japan, 19 for the Allies

CA tone, DD Kagero, BB Yoshi, BB Minowara, and DD Daitei ( again!!! )
The 2 BBs are the two free Kongos I game him to start the game.

More Variants - The Allies ride again - No xargun please

Post by Nomad »

September 1, 1943 continued

It is now time to ask questions and solicit opinions.

It is now 1 September 1943 in our game and within 30 days I will get 4 more CVs and that will give me a total of 18 size 90 CVs.

The question that I am asking for information, suggestions, opinions, etc. is what do you think is the best way to organize
them and utilize them.

In the near future I will be invading Truk and not too long after I will need to invade either the Marianas or possibly
somewhere in the PI.

At this time I am organizing them into 3 TFs, but I can easily change that.
I could utilize them in 2-6 TFs if I need to. I would be scraping the bottom of the barrel to provide escorts for 6 TFs.

I have thought about using the three TFs in one hex or maybe the idea of putting them into 3 adjacent hexes.

So, lets hear your ideas please.

You should always have two CV TFs on their way to refuel/rearm or in refit, so that leaves four TFs to escort strongly. I would try to organize TFs with 3 CVs, 1 or 2 CVLs, 2 fast BBs or CBs, 2 CAs and 2-4 big CLs. DDs as available, but at least 10. BBs and CAs detachable for surface combat or bombardment missions.

I tried the idea of putting CV TFs in adjoining hexes with CAP at range 1, but one CV TF seemed to always be the target for the enemy and the CAP didn't always cover so well. I say put them all in the same hex.

Thank you BBfanboy, I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. I am hoping that others will chime in, the more the merrier. I am also thinking that I will delay
any Marianas invasion until middle to late 1944 and instead move up the NG coast, into the Moluccas, and then to Manado. That would provide me with land base
air support and offer a point at which I could go in many different directions. An invasion of Truk will be quick, it should only take at most 2 days to unload troops
and disappear. That will not give him much time to respond. I want to take the island but am not sure I want a direct confrontation with his CV/CVL fleet at this time.

So, at the start of this turn I got this message
Previous report of sinking of BB Yoshi incorrect. Ship sighted and engaged at 52, 56
Then
Morning Air attack on TF, near Rangoon at 52,56

There were ship sinking sounds after the combat, no TF icon shows up on the map.
One thing, Xargun pointed out that when I created the two Kongo BBs I game him, I did not add any float plane units to them, so there will be no float planes lost on the ground if it did sink.
It is too bad the commander did not send out any TBs for this engagement, and weather seems to prevent an afternoon attack, bad weather icons all over the area.
3 of the hits on the BB showed that an AA weapon was destroyed, that does increase fire and sys damage.
Other than the DD, no other ships showed up on the sunk ship list

Extensive bombing of Rabaul continues, both the airfield and port. The British CVs will take up a position to prevent any ships entering or leaving Rangoon.
No ships show up in port there, but there are two TFs, a CA and a CM shown on mouseover.

Ground troops have started to march on Shwebo, which seems to be void of enemy troops.

Air bombing continues at Rangoon, but the medium bombers will switch to bombing troops at Prome, I have a 5 Infantry Divisions moving across the river to try and take it.
They will take 7 or 8 days to move in combat mode

Minimal bombing elsewhere.

No ground or naval activity.

My CVs did not launch any flights, I think either he has single ship TFs at Rangoon, or weather, again bad weather icons all over the area.

Bombing continues at Rangoon and Prome.

I do wish others would chime in on my earlier question/request for help.

Just caught up here. Not sure about strategy, but I'll chime in on tactics.

I usually group my CVs into fairly large TFs of about 4-6 CVs each. It depends on the number of escorts you have. I'll have them all follow a surface TF of a lower TF number (supposedly lower TF numbers will engage first). I try to keep them all in the same hex.

One thing I also do is separate surface TFs into BB ones, CA ones and CL ones (meaning a few BBs, CAs -OR- CLs and the rest DDs).

I'm off to lunch. I'll see if I can add some thought later this afternoon.

Good luck!

Cheers,
CB

Ya same here doesn't the game penalize you for having too many planes in a group for example in 43 isn't it 150 for allies and that increases to 200 in 44 and just 200 for Japanese all-game?

based on that knowing what I usually do would be maybe 2 CVs and 1 CVl comes to 44 when you get fully coordinated. then at least 1 BB 3 CAs and enough DDs to reach 14 or 15 in a task force Mabey 13 if you want to save the extra DD.

I don't remember the details and don't have the manual handy, but going over the 1943 limit of 150 isn't too big of an issue in my opinion. One negative about having a lot of CV TFs is that gives you more of a chance of one reacting on its own toward the KB and getting slaughtered piecemeal (also, don't use Halsey unless that TF is operating by itself). There are a few old AARs where the CV TFs didn't all stick together, with not very good results for the Allies.
