Why 2 editors?

Post by MarkShot »

Why does WITE-2 have two editors?

In either is it easy to set up toy cases to vary single factors like CPP, terrain, weather to see how outcomes are impacted. I like doing that when easy as it is a good way to learn.

Thanks. (thanks for your patience; my last dumb question for today)

Because Pavel started on a rewrite of the editor to add some new features, and fix some annoying things that didn't work well in the old editor. Unfortunately, the work was taking a long time. In order to make it easier for him to work on the new editor and not force him to make the old editor do some things it couldn't, we opened up the new editor which is not finished, but made the old editor still accessible. It was the best/fastest way to get us to the new editor. We've never documented the editor, so it's a use at your own risk kind of thing. The plan is eventually to switch to the new editor, although I don't know if we will ever remove the old editor fully. Now, to do unit renames, you have to use the new editor, and we realize this is a pain. There were some things that our scenario designers and data keepers wanted to see in the editor. Trying to make their life easier is a goal of ours so we can keep producing scenarios. We realize there's a modder community out there, but realistically it's tough for most people to do much more than change a few items or just look at the data (and do simple tests like you mentioned). Pavel has a full time day job so he's limited in how much he can do, and there's always something coming up for him to do beside the editor, which makes even less time for the editor. But he keeps making progress.
All understanding comes after the fact.
