Day Two - 10h43

Meanwhile, the CO of the 4th Armoured Brigade radio the divisional HQ to announce he has reached Otterlo Woods and is now passing under my command. I immediately order the 23rd Canadian Field Engineer Coy to move at full speed to secure the Otterlo Woods objective. The 4th Arm Bde itself is ordered towards the Otterlo village, but through the northern road, to take the Germans in the back:

Nice work. That behaviour where the Bde ordered its arty forward after the attack has been fixed in the patch. The arty will saty in there current firebase location if they have the range to reach the objective.

I'm happy to hear that [:)] It is indeed annoying to see that suddenly the AI is bringing forward its arty much to close to the action.

Day Two - 15h00

All units are progressing according to plan. The 4th Arm Bde is now just north of Otterlo. I order it to FUP at Otterlo itself and then attack west. I intend to use the 4th bde arty to soften up the Germans before the attack (see picture below).

The CO of the 1/7 Queens also reports for duty. I order it to join its brigade at Heartbreak Ridge (the 8th Hussard will also report later on at 16h23, they are also ordered to go to Heartbreak Ridge).

Day Two - 16h00

It seems our German friends on the Amsterdamsche Weg are turning around in front of the oncoming 22nd Arm Bde. Time to launch the attack: I order Cracroft to attack on the highway in the vinicity of Langenberg, while the 5th IDG Rgt will attack from the north.

Day Two – 19h00

At the brigade commanders’ briefing and report, the current state of operations around Ede is discussed. Brigadier General Cracroft reports that the 22nd Arm is making very slow progress for now and as yet to form up for the attack. The battle will last for the whole night and might not be concluded successfully. As far as the 5th Iniskillen Rgt is concerned, the current axis of attack is not going anywhere. They are attacking on open ground and are being easily disrupted. On the other hand, Pepper from the 131st reports few activity for now, with only a couple of German coys firing sporadically on them. Considering that, I order that 1/7 Queens Btn and 8th Hussards Rgt will start moving towards Ede to support the offensive on Ede.

The plan is the following (see picture below): 5 IDG Rgt will stop their attack on the highway to move into an assembly area in the woods, just northeast of Ede. 1/7 Queens and 8th Hussards will join them the assembly area later during the night. This will be Task Force Ede, under the command of the 1/7 Queens Btn CO. Task Force Ede will stay put until early in the morning, and then they will attack towards Ede. The 22nd Arm Bde will continue its attack until midnight. If no breakthrough can be achieved by then, they will cease all operations for the night and get some rest. If a breakthrough is achieved, they will press on through the night and Task Force Ede could also intervene by taking the Germans in the back if necessary (in any case, if we see the Germans are massively retreating into Ede, Task Force Ede will intervene to block their path of retreat).

Further north, the 4th Arm Bde operations in Otterlo are going well. They are still forming up and the attack should be underway sometime tonight.

Day Two – 22h14

The plan is progressing as expected. 8th Hussards and 1/7 Queens are moving rapidly towards the assembly area of task force Ede. 22nd Arm Bde is slowly pushing on the Germans.

Day Three – 00h00

22nd Arm Bde have not met a lot of resistance since 22h00, so I order Cracroft to continue the attack and press on the highway for the rest of the night.

Day Three – 2h11

Pepper (131st Queens) radioes me to indicate he is being encircled on the western, eastern, and northern part of his positions with 4 to 5 enemy companies (see screenshot below). We have temporarily lost Heartbreak Ridge. I order him to hold steadfastly for the rest of the night. If the situation becomes too serious and more German units are coming in his area, I will detach some of the 4th Arm Bde units to support his position.

Day Three – 5h00

As the sun starts is rising on the horizon, Cracroft’s 22nd Arm Bde is nearing Langenberg, and he radioes me to report that the many German units which occupied the Langenberg village seem to have vanished. This could mean the Germans have managed to retreat unobserved into Ede, and this would be bad news indeed. Task Force Ede and 22nd Arm Bde are mostly made up of armoured units ill-suited for urban fighting, notwithstanding the high civilian casualties a urban battle for Ede could provoke. To verify that, I ask the Recce Trp of the 5th Royal Tank Rgt (which is still in an observation position southeast of Ede) to probe forward and enter the southern industrial area of Ede and report any enemy concentration. At the same time, I order Task Force Ede to prepare an assault west of Langenberg in the hope that the Germans are just lurking there.

Day Three – 6h00

An enemy force of about 1000 enemy men has appeared 500m northwest of Heartbreak Ridge, but for now they are being held at a distance with arty bombardments. Heartbreak Ridge is secured again.

Recce Trp of the 5th Royal Tank Rgt has spotted an engineering enemy unit in the southern industrial area of Ede.

Day Three – 8h00

TF Ede and 22nd Arm Bde link up in Langenberg (see screenshot below). The Germans are nowhere around, except for a lonely and battered mortar platoon that will surrender rapidly. Meanwhile, Recce Trp of the 5 RTR has not seen many Germans so far in its probing of Ede. So, in conclusion, we don’t really know where these Germans have went, but the time seems to be ripe to enter and secure Ede. So I gave TF Ede the order to move onto Ede. 22nd Arm Bde will stay behind at Langenberg and join TF Ede only if resistance is encountered.

Day Three – 8h38

After discussing with the CO of the 4th Arm Bde who is reporting that he is now completed with offensive operations in Otterlo area, I decide it is now time to move on to North West Hills. I order the 4th Arm Bde to start moving on the northern road to North West Hills (see screenshot). However, I keep as a reserve force the 15/19 Hussards Rgt. They will stay in their current position and bring support to 131st Queens at Heartbreak Ridge if the heat goes up at the Ridge (for now, the Germans around the ridge have been contained relatively easy).
