Amphibious engine

Post by chemist »

Historically, AKA and APA unloaded out of range of CD Guns.
I know we make allowances by putting in BB and CA with the APA and AKa to draw fire/

I wish the engine was better and losses were with LC's (some) and troops not APA, LSD and AKA's .

This CD gun engine wrecks a near perfect game for me. So, next time someone is making a mod. torn down the CD guns and aim them at landing troops not ship unless they a big 5" guns . Clearly LST and LCI are fair game as they are in shore (usually 3 wave)

You may be right about the transports staying out of range, but the game is designed to work at the strategic and operational level and cannot parse the 40 mile wide hex to keep some landing vessels in range and some out. If the TF is landing troops, all associated vessels are deemed in range. To program it back in 2009 to the level you want would have made the game exceed most home computers' storage and processing capacity. Time constraints and cost of programming also enter into it.

So, valid point, but it's just something we have to live with. FWIW, against the AI, it is the AI's transports that suffer most from shore batteries - it never provides enough BBs or CAs for suppression and absorption of my anti-ship fire.

On the other hand, xAKL,xAK and AP/APA are very resilient to CD gun fire, especially if a ship is empty, so gun hits do not start fires. For gamey purposes you could include and empty, most durable xAK in our amphibious TF to soak those 75-155mm arty rounds.

The small landing craft from the larger vessels are not shown but that is where the losses come from when squads and devices are damaged or destroyed. The game does not go into the details of how many there are on each ship and what happens to those but it is abstracted in how fast the vessels can unload.

Seek peace but keep your gun handy.
