How does this look on a 5K screen?

Post by Solaristics »

Sometimes I get trouble with games where the text is either too small in native 5K or too blurry in non-native. This is usually a deal-breaker for games like this. If the game has UI scaling usually there isn't a problem. Anyone had experience of this?

I've been playing on a 4k widescreen with multiple monitors and its fine for me and I don't have the best eyesight.

Sadly, no one on the team currently has a screen that big. Soon maybe. Glad to hear it looks good.

EDIT: I stand corrected. William has a jumbotron screen. Probably forgot that.

It's fine on 4k for me.

I debugged and also found and fixed some high DpI issues on this 5120x2160 screen, using 110% display scaling:
5120x2160_bottom_cropped.png
5120x2160_bottom_cropped.png (9.51 MiB) Viewed 1051 times
The .png image was cropped vertically to meet the forum's 10MB file size limit. You see it as it appears on my screen (no .jpg artifacts).

I expect you'll like it on a 5K.

Thanks. My key concern is font size and sharpness, which is a bit hard to tell from the image. What point size would you estimate the smallest text font to be? Can scaling go over 110%?

The game renders natively to the screen resolution (no upscaling by Windows, and resulting blurriness).
Scaling can go larger; on the 15" 4K laptop I'm using 175%.

Thanks again. When you talk about scaling, are you referring to the Windows System>Display>Scale and Layout>Change the size of text drop down box? I decided to buy the game but I don't see an in-game scaling option. It seems that not all the game elements are scaling: the F7 box, the scenario text description, and the map (seems small even at 160%) don't seem to scale. I'm a bit busy today but I'll send some screenshots to support tomorrow.

The game reflects the Windows Display Scale that is set prior to starting. UI and forms should scale accordingly.
The map doesn't scale, but has a separate zoom setting (which you've found).

I also find some of the text small and hard to read, even on a 4k screen. In order to help with this, I use a screen resolution tool called Res-o-Matic (free and you can google to find it in a number of places). Basically is a tool where you can setup a desktop icon that runs games/programs at a certain resolution when you start it up and then it returns your screen resolution to the normal setting after the game closes. This is much better than going into Windows settings and changing the resolution/scaling, since that is a manual step before and after playing the game and it changes the setting for everything. With this tool you set it up per game and it is done automatically so no different then clicking on a startup icon. I setup mine to lower the resolution although I know I lose screen reeal estate, at least I can read all the text much better.

I use this on all my games where the game itself doesn't have the ability to fully scale enough to make text readable for me as with my increasing age, smaller text becoming a bigger problem for me.

Thank you Grim for that tip.

I too have eyes that struggle with small text - and also the white on grey text - is there a way to change the text colours?

I play on a 17" laptop.

No. Text colors are fixed in-game. Which dialogs are you having issues with?

Hi Jim, thanks for the reply.

Basically, all the screens with instructions - such as the welcome screen. I tried one of the other poster's suggestions of changing the screen resolution - but that introduces a blurry fuzziness of its own.

I'm sure you have more important things to handle at the moment so soon after release.

Incidentally some ancient games such as Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri had alternate color palettes:

https://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?P ... ew;down=44

In Hearts of Iron I could alter the unit colours because they had black on dark red for Russia - which I also could not read - so I changed the dark red to a light pink (which probably annoyed the Russians no end !) This just involved using a different color number (RGB?) in a settings config file.

In a way - it just adds to the fog of war - :)
