Why are hotkeys Ctrl+X and not just X?

Post by Solaristics »

I've not spent long with the game yet, so I might be missing something, but it seems hotkeys are mostly Ctrl+key rather than just the key. I had assumed this was because the key was used for other functions, but it doesn't seem to be. I'm sure there must be a coding reason for it but usability-wise it is not great. I tried the autohotkey utility but it didn't seem to work with the game.

Most games on windows use ctrl or alt because if you are ever required to enter text somewhere in the game, you have to have the alphabet conflict-free. At least that's been my experience. I would imagine if a game is in windowed mode you'd have the issue with apps in other windows also.

As noted by thewood1, it is a text/windows convention.

I'm still dealing with technical issues, so haven't played the game enough to see that you have to enter text somewhere. Where does that happen?

Shadow Empires, Warplan Pacific, and War in the East, just to name some examples, all have single-key hot keys.

Try this AHK script, I use it myself:

Most editing comes in the scenario editor, which shares the same underlying game code to perform actions on the map. As noted above, there are ways around this with systems like the AHK script, extra buttons on your mouse or keyboard, or even stream deck devices.

Is there a way to use AHK to press Shift+Left mouse to see LOS from a hex without first having to turn on the LOS tool?
A minor thing but nice to have.
