Sprint speed versus max speed in selection panel: why are they different?

Post by 100thMonkey »

I’ve just noticed that the sprint speed shown in ship designer is different than the max speed shown in the selection panel. I’ve always assumed that “Sprint” was the maximum speed a ship can reach (excluding hyperspace travel). But the game seems to have another view of things... Am I wrong in my assumption? Is this a ship designer bug?

Here’s an example from my current game. The selection panel of one of my frigate (Frigate III design) shows 58 as its maximum speed in the selection panel.

And here’s the sprint speed shown in the ship designer for the same design:

If “Sprint” isn’t the ship’s max speed, than what is it exactly? When would a ship go at sprint speed, and why wouldn’t it go at max speed instead?

They should be the same.

Do you have a character like an admiral assigned whose bonuses may be boosting the ship's speed for the ship at the top?

No, there's no admiral in the fleet (I don't have any currently). There's a general though (the fleet has some troop transports), but it doesn't look like any of its traits or skills are speed related:

Hm, does that ship hull have a speed bonus? Perhaps that's not being applied in the design screen.

Good thinking, but it doesn't seem to be the case. The frigate's hull is of the basic type (I haven't yet researched "Improved Frigates"), and I don't see any mention of a speed bonus when I look at its spec in the tech tree. I also looked at all my empire bonuses, and I don't see anything there either related to ship speeds.

Do you want a save to look at it?

There's a discrepancy for my frigates and escorts (EDIT: and destroyers), but not for the tankers and troop transports in the same fleet.

I've also seen differences in ships from another empire (Maxus Consortium - Teekans), but they DO have an admiral in the fleet with a speed bonus.

Just found something: at the bottom of the ship overview panel for the frigate design, in the bonuses section, there's a "Ship Speed: +15%"! There's also a "Ship Maneuvering: +15%". But I have no idea where it's coming from, and there isn't any tooltip.

I did have an admiral a while back, but I dismissed him. In fact, the logs say that I had two. But I do not have any currently. And there's nothing in the message log about admiral dismissals. I wonder if, for some reason, its (their?) bonuses didn't get erased?

In any case, I think it would be a very good idea to add tooltips for the bonuses in the ship designer.

Even weirder: the destroyers only have the speed bonus, not the ship maneuvering bonus! And their speed bonus is only +10% (not +15% like in the frigates). Any idea of what's going on?

I've dismissed another character, this time an ambassador (who was also really bad). And it's dismissal doesn't appear in the logs either. So it looks as if character dismissals do not appear at all in the message logs. Don't you think they should?

The basic Frigate has a +15% speed bonus built into the hull, so I think that's what's going on here. We just hadn't noticed the design screen diagram wasn't including it. It is shown on the design screen, but way at the bottom as a separate bonus. Probably the easiest place to see these is to hover over the hulls for their details in the research project that unlocks them. It would certainly be more clear if we also included the bonus in the speed diagram calculations.

Definitely, it'd be good to include the bonuses in the speeds shown in the ship designer.

Am I to assume that the bonuses shown in the "Bonuses" section of the design overview will always be from the hull? Because if they could come from somewhere else, then tooltips would definitely be very welcomed. ;)

Thanks for the help.
