Soviet Airborne Corps

Post by carlhebert »

In the Western Ukraine '43-'44 scenario, on the 1st turn, the Soviet 33rd Guards Airborne Corps is located at hex 229, 182. Having noticed this, I tried to create an Airborne Corps in a '41 campaign game I was recently playing. The game would not let me. Was there such a unit as a Soviet Airborne Corps and can they be used in a campaign game?

Replying to my own post, it may be possible that in the campaign game I was trying to combine airborne divisions which were scheduled to withdraw or be transferred to another TB. I will try again later in the game--my opponent and I are just starting a new '41 campaign.

Airborne Corps are not buildable. Something Trey must have added special for the Western Ukraine scenario.

During the war there were no Soviet airborne corps. The airborne divisions were part of the regular guards rifle corps. In particular, the 33rd Guards Rifle Corps during its existence consisted not only of airborne, but also of ordinary rifle divisions:

Malyhin is correct that there were no actual guards airborne corps. However, there were several guards rifle corps that were comprised entirely of guards airborne divisions. This was just a choice to reflect those handful of corps to get some airborne flavor in the game.

Thanks, Trey, for the explanation. I was hoping I could create a corps of Red Army supermen to take on particularly difficult missions.

Airborne corps exist in the game in the initial period of the war, but they are made up of brigades, not divisions, and are similar in strength to a division, not a corps.
