Railroad Yards

Post by Mac Linehan »

Gents-

Can an in game level 1 RR yard, be increased in size? I have used the editor to do so, but thought I would ask the Smart Guys(tm).

Finally made the decision to learn WitE2 and spent about 6 weeks reading and studying the rules. Am playing a heavily modified VL intro scenario (to see how it all works). I keep the settings at "normal" w FOW + movement fow on. What an awesome game. My heart will always be w WitP AE; WitW and now WitE2 are very enjoyable to play.

Thank You for your help!
Mac

Note: I am currently rereading "When Titans Clashed" (Glantz), WitE2 does it best to emulate all the factors that affected both sides.

I guess u can't.

You can put a HQ on top of a Depot, this will cause the Depot to increase it's capacity.

Additional you can put a FBD on top of a Depot, if you do so the Depot will "request" more freight like 2 turns later, so one turn this FBD needs to stay in that Depot without helping anything (IIRC).
From what I understand: A lvl 4 Depot asks for it's full amount of freight possible, while levels 1-3 are just asking for about 4k freight each turn, no matter which capacity their railyard has. This 4k is then lowered by distance (see picture, where lvl 1-3 Depots were always asking for 4k at close distance and this lowered for depots with greater range to the freight source)

No, you cannot increase the size of the railyards at a location. You can create a new depot in a hex without railyards, in which case a level 1 railyard will be built. However, railyard 1 locations don't actually generate any top line rail capacity in the system, so there's no reason to spam depots just to create railyards.
All understanding comes after the fact.

Gents-

I deeply appreciate your clarification!

Wiedrock-
Your diagram and insight was very useful.

Joel-
I suspected as such, I will not build RR Yards unless there is a specific purpose

Some thoughts:

I really enjoy the high level of detail; attention to detail does pay off. I am a rules reader (and re-reader) but there is no substitute for game time experience.

The Prep Points and fatigue was a much needed addition; as has been pointed out in other posts, careful planning and small bites are the way to go. One has only to study the current real world conflict in the Ukraine to see and understand how critical logistics and support is to each side.

The AOG concept is not difficult to understand or implement, much has been streamlined- even with full manual control which for me is the way to go.

The Intro VL scenario is a good way to learn, it is all about logistics, conserving PP and maximizing CV. As I become more familiar with the rules and gain confidence, I will edit and strengthen the German side. I don't mind getting my butt kicked (sometimes a common experience...;), as long as I feel I understood what happened and why.

I give WitE2 5 stars; a "Well Done" to the 2by3 game studio!

More Mods, patches and DLC, please!

Thank You
Mac

Yes, this is how you create a super depot. Most freight will come directly from an NSS.

Not sure where this came from, but reality is much different. This will lead you to underperform as Axis, so I'll address it from that perspective.

First off, depots do indeed tend to get less freight the farther it has to travel along a rail line from source to destination. But a level 1-3 depot located in the Soviet Union and that is not a port (the latter exhibits different behaviors) seldom gets more than a couple hundred tons a week no matter where they are. In contrast, depots in Poland, Rumania or Hungary can receive 1-1.2k per week.

Now if we look at a level 4 depot in the Soviet Union, close to the frontier/border, they will often receive 2k tons or more each week until they reach capacity. For a level 1 yard of 10k capacity, that's 3-5 turns. Depots that are along the front lines will always vary. You can impact these numbers to a degree by pulsing freight from depots in the Soviet Union that are full. All that entails is setting the depot to a priority of 0-3 and it will be forwarded to a level 4 depot only. As the depot is emptied, you can then set priority back to 4 to allow it to refill once again. Rinse and repeat.

It's long ago I can't recall everything.

It's based on some simple tests (where I tried to avoid soviet area debuff stuff and so on) I've done some months ago, where I encountered that freight is usually being shipped in (multiple) stacks of 4k, which then get lowered by range/rail congestion. And yes, ports are another topic, there it may be like stacks of 8k (can't remember). The stack size can also be checked lookin for the numbers in the Logistics Phase Report > Supply where a NSS sends out multiple stacks of ~4k instead of 12k at once.
And that's all I stated, it's usually 4k and it gets lower with distance/congestion.
To erase partisans, weather and so on I planned to create a Scenario without all that Partisan and national debuff stuff + straight rail lines for testing purpose but I discontinued my work on this and focused on modding Divisional Insignias instead.
