Is it possible to edit the sound files so that only the jungle ambience file plays?

Campaign Series: Vietnam is a new turn-based, tactical/operational war game that focuses on the Indochina War, Vietnam Civil War and the first years of US involvement in Vietnam with over 100 historical scenarios.

Is it possible to edit the sound files so that only the jungle ambience file plays?

Post by VonWulfen »

Hello all.
Is it possible to edit the music files so that only the jungle ambiance file plays?
I am not 100% but the options/sound/background music seems to have a mix of weapons, music, and ambiance.
Options/sound/background sound seems to be all weapons firing.
I like just the jungle ambiance while playing as it is more authentic for small platoons etc sneaking through dense jungle playing cat and mouse with weapons firing only when units actually open fire.
Cheers :)

I suppose this would work:
  • In your Sounds folder, delete backg0.ogg .. backg7.ogg, and backg10.ogg ... backg12.ogg. (Make backups somewhere if you might later wish to restore them.)
  • Still in the Sounds folder, copy/paste multiple copies of backg8.ogg & backg9.ogg.
  • Rename the copy files as backg0.ogg .. backg7.ogg, and backg10.ogg ... back12.ogg.
As a result, you have backg0.ogg ... backg12.ogg files with the data of backg8.ogg and/or backg9.ogg.

You might try having backg8.ogg and backg9.ogg only, and none of the other numbered files. But that might lead to silent gaps most of the time, or worse.

You could also try fiddling with sounds.dat, but that is fraught with peril.

For instance, modding music files is detailed in Developer Diary #5 - Groovy, baby!

Good luck if you want to go even further into modding! Next step: add those CCR and Stones tunes to your game install :D

I advice anyone who wants jungle ambience to just go to Youtube and type in "jungle sounds" or something similar.
I give a link to what I am using currently, it goes for 8 hours. I have ingame combat sounds and music on, background sounds are off of course. Together with the South East Asian ingame music it gives you a really nice blend and a soothing experience. Despite the carnage going on on the screen...

And for night missions or when the mission turns night, you want a different ambient sound, of course.

By the way, I do this with other games as well. Playing the Battle of the Bulge? Type in "forest sounds snow" or something similar and enjoy the immersion.
