I had. I repeatedly answered his questions but would not accept my answers nor answers from other people. He was using the wrong manual as well. He wants a ship for only repairing cruisers and another ship only for repairing battleships?[8|]
Easy now - there are AGs for small patrol vessels and ADs for DDs and ASs for SSs - it is not to wild an idea to think there may be tenders for repair of CAs and BBs.
Of course the manual contains the answers in convenient table form, but not everyone learns by reading - some prefer to learn by seeing an example play out or just asking. Just keep the redirects to the manual and forum links coming.

Those repair ships for the CAs and BBS, as well as any other ship, are the ARs. If he would look things up as well as attempt to comprehend what is presented, that would help me. But I did Green Button him.

Hello all,

I've searched around a little but am having difficulty finding reference to YO type ships 'Yard Oilers'. I suppose my question is what do people use them for? They have a small fuel cargo capacity - are they meant to simply aid refueling in port, or are they just handy fuel transports.

Is there a thread discussing them (there seems to be one on most other things

Thanks

Those were used in ports but you can also use them to move small amounts of fuel/oil around to smaller ports as well. Treat them like small AOs and you would not be wrong. They are useful little ships.

Thank you for this useful guide..

Question : I have an AS (capacity 3400) with 41 system ,8 floating and 6 Engines damages.

I can't rearm torpedo with her... Is it due to damages?

Yes,

Damage will prevent this. As I recall it is the systems damage most critical.
You want to get that under 30.

Yes, it has too high damage and cannot function. I don't remember for sure, but I think combined damage needs to be under 50 for tender to work. (Caveat: it might need to be even lower, but didn't find the number in quick search).

Also, don't forget to load AS with supply, it cannot function as source of reloads without any supply.

I ran this out in the editor.

I was wrong it is not a number…...so less than 30 system damage may not do it.

It is the system damage.
When you take systems damage you lose operation points.

You need a certain amount of operation points to rearm.

So it seems to be a moving scale; the more systems damage you take
the less operation points you have to work with.

In my test below I needed 60 operation points for the tender and the sub
to rearm the torpedoes.

So if the sub also had damage I may have got to the 60 I needed.

Tenders Can Refuel Ships it can Rearm
If a Tender can rearm a ship, it can refuel it assuming it meets all other requirements (e.g., has fuel, sufficient Ops points) [forum – don bowen].

I seem to be unable to get submarine tenders to refuel a submarine. Is this an exception to the above rule? Apologies if answered, I tried all the various search methods.

Very old inf, not even sure that was ever the case. There are three ways to refuel a ship, port, oiler's bulk tanks, or another ship's own tanks. Subs can only refuel from port.

Support ship do not refuel anything unless they are also oilers, and there are none like that.

And note the exception on tender functioning - ARs and ARDs cannot have ANY damage themselves if they are to service another ship. Not even one point of system damage.

maybe if these tenders had any fuel tank they would.... needs testing.. add fuel transport capacity (the way some big AKx have it) to tender and see if it refuels

You do not need to test anything. Only oilers (AO) will refuel from their bulk fuel tanks. There are some cargo ships that have them but like tankers they cannot be used to refuel other ships, or even themselves. All ships can, if they have spare fuel, refuel other ships from their own fuel tanks.

Refuelling from AOs is hard coded. However, I do not know if you can fiddle with the editor and create some magic AS tender, say! that is also an AO. I suspect not as the game would use ship type to determine what it's capable off in the game.

I've just had a quick look at the editor and there's nothing you can change to do the above other than change it's type.

I have just tested it in Bottlenecks mod where AD with small fuel capacity disbanded in port with no fuel has actually refueled DDs, which had to be disbanded for that to happen. Therefore tenders DO refuel if they have fuel tanks. None have in vanilla so it is irrelevant here, but mechanics are there.

I have refueled ships from another ship of any type. If it's a AO it will refuel from its cargo. But if you have a TF with ships that can join your under supplied TF then they can meet up, join and then with a click of the mouse refuel the other ships.....GP

Subs cannot refuel each other at sea or in port. The Germans developed 'milch cow' subs to refuel theirs at sea, but I don't know if that required specialized pumping equipment and hoses.
AFAIK the Allies never did this. Pretty sure they don't refuel nukes at sea either ... :P

I think the bigger issue with subs was that they used diesel engines which need diesel fuel while most of the larger ships of the era hade steam turbines. Tankers or Oilers would typically not have diesel fuel onboard unless they are delivering to a base specifically for subs.

Otherwise, as far as equipment goes, refuelling a small patrol boat or AM would be about the same as refuelling a sub.
Yes, I realize that PT boats also use a different kind of fuel - avgas.

US Fletcher class destroyers used both bunker fuel and diesel fuel.

You mean that they could burn diesel in the boiler or did you mean for the emergency generator?

Still the logistics were not really there for most of the fleet oilers etc to carry diesel fuel for sub resupply. And fleet subs (both US & IJN) have enough range to go where they need to, being more limited by consumables, fresh water and maybe simple crew morale - being cooped up in the steel tube for too long is not so great.
