Bug: Damaged cruiser is not being repaired

Post by acarney »

Took the steps below to try to get a cruiser with fuel, but a disabled reactor, repaired. It's health was 70%.
  • Ordered the entire fleet to be repaired.
  • Removed the damaged cruiser from the fleet.
  • Gave a large construction ship orders to move to the damaged cruiser.
  • Selected the construction ship, then right-clicked on the cruiser: Only options were to move to the cruiser or stop.
  • Returned the construction to full automatic.
Finally asked for & got help from someone on Steam:
  • Go into the Game Editor
  • Deleted the damaged cruiser
  • Created a new cruiser
Squirreled away the saved game file, prior to go into the Game Editor, so I'd be happy to share it w. the devs.

Even if is costly, there should be a way to repair damaged ships ... no matter the extent of the damage.

;)

They'd like an upload of the save with the damaged cruiser and the construction ship next to it. If you lost it already, the next time I come across this, I'll try to do the same... though I've said something like this a half dozen times but have yet to do it.

  • The squirreled away saved game definitely has the injured cruiser; it's the only damaged one not in a fleet, and probably the only cruiser period not in a fleet.
  • Even if one of the construction ships is not next to the crippled cruiser, it's easy enough to summon one.
  • Do you know the procedure for sending the devs, a saved game file?

Can't the devs write an event triggered with some keyboard shortcut that disables or destroys the reactor of an escort and then drains its energy down to zero, start a game, build an escort and press the key on the keyboard?

Or modify a weapon to ignore 100% shields and armor, do low damage to hull but do component damage to reactors (like ion weapons), put that weapon on something, make it attack a cruiser, and when the cruiser has a destroyed reactor, save the game and send it to themselves?

I don't understand why providing a save file is requested.
Multiple people have reported something similar to this (there are other posts, incuding one on this forum from March 2022) and I am fairly sure I've seen it explicitly written that construction ships can only provide basic repairs in space, more extensive repairs require construction yards at spaceports. Regardless, it's clear that a ship with zero energy cannot meet static energy requirements, cannot power command centre, and so will never repair its reactor by itself. It's clearly observable for anyone who does spend any time playing the game, and obvious for those who put the slightest thought into it.

So why the request? It seems to indicate defaulting to inaction. It just isn't likely this has never been observed by someone on the dev team.

Please do share that save with us and tell us how to reproduce what you're seeing and we'll investigate.

Hi Erik,

Followed the instructions posted in Steam, for creating a bug report. Regarding the saved game file, compressed it into a .GZ file & put it in my DropBox ... if you could tell me whom to share it with, would be happy to. That file is from last Monday, and I have been careful not to disturb it.

Once you open that saved game file, filter ships on those NOT in a fleet. There is probably only 1 cruiser that will be displayed; definitely one cruiser with damage on that list.

Once you find that cruiser, there may or may not be a large construction ship next to it. If not, tell one of the them to move to the cruiser. Once there, it will not do anything, nor can it be ordered to interact with the damaged cruiser.

You are welcome to post the save in this thread as an attachment. If you already submitted a bug report with the dropbox link that's fine as well.

Tried to attach the game file, but even .GZ'ed, it is 13.1M in size; too big. Let me know if the file cannot be accessed in my bug report.

Kinda funny about the file name: It was saved on Ground Hog Day 2909.
