Adjusted WRA so the Sov cruisers won't be so trigger happy but the Sov bombers will be Fixed a couple bits, not sure if I've got the Mig-25 issue sorted out yet.
PACT has superiority in almost every facet here and NATO is facing time and logistics problems. After finishing the scenario I was miffed that the fighters just kept coming; well, after checking under the hood, now I know why: PACT almost has more Fulcrum Cs alone (131) than NATO has aircraft! To make the situation worse, the shortage of US AAMs and distance from the fight have the carrier-based Tomcats play less of a role in the air game than I would have liked. To meet the primary mission (destroy airfields and the Baltic fleet) also means having the F18s in a purely strike role, which leaves Turkish and Greek F-16s with AIM-9s and F4s with older Sparrow variants fighting a lot of front-line Soviet fighters. Did you know that the AIM-7E2 missile carried by the F4s has a 50% chance of being spoofed by the Fulcrum C ECM? Me either, until now!
My first thought when ordered to send the Iowa north on the bombardment mission: yep, airstrike incoming. I didn't realize that there would be 60+ bombers! Perhaps I missed it in the scenario brief, but shouldn't there be at least a hint of intel on the bombers? I'm no two-star admiral, but the first question I would ask when bringing a carrier north into the Aegean would be about the Backfires and Badgers. Especially after receiving orders to send the Iowa into the north Aegean. Being a good (simulated) officer, I sent her in anyway....but after hitting the target with six 16-inch shells, I finally gave up in frustration and destroyed the target with air assets. Not sure how a target with no HP and no armor stood up to those 16 inch shells.
The Soviet Kilo north of Istanbul was surfaced for the bulk of the game.
A lot of Soviet strike aircraft had no loadouts or missions.
I love that you add the options to add additional air assets at the beginning of the game. However, without knowing the risk/reward, it's hard to make a decision. I ended up taking all the extra F16s and F4s, which put me 820 points in the hole to begin with (figured it was better to have more than less). But then I started to see the points roll in and realized there was almost no way to earn all those points back. Killing the Slava was only worth 50 points and shutting down a runway was 15 points. I think I ended up with an Average victory and 240ish points.
Last note: Shouldn't the Soviets be low on munitions at this point in the war as well? I thought I counted 80ish bombers armed with Kitchens, and all the front-line Soviet fighters seemed to have full munitions stocks. The Soviet ships also had full loads of SAMs and SSMs.
I really wanted to show the player what it would be like to attack a properly defended bastion, you should see the Kola!
I'll put a note on the bombers and you have a point on the missile situation for the Sovs, I'll drop them down a bit.
TBH I was struggling to find a use for the Iowa so created this target as something that it should be able to deal with. I'll re-think it and come up with something it can destroy better.
Good point on the scoring. I'll make the ships and runways a bit more valuable.
The Sov strike AC are really there as targets to reward the NATO player who does a good recce and kills a lot of AC on the ground. There are some empty air bases up there as well so a full recce should help select which ones to hit because you can't hit them all.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks again for the comments.
I´m playing v1.2 and I noticed that the soviet forward helo base at the coast of the Black Sea are scrambling ASW helo´s to attack a very uncertain sub contact in the northern Aegean sea. They are flying directly into NATO held airspace on a suicide mission.
Perhaps you should set up an area for the ASW strike mission in the Black sea so they don´t kill them selves this way.
One glitch, the trigger for Arc Royal getting to the final zone points is the Nimitz arriving. Nimitz trigger is used twice.
Critical to surviving the bomber strike is to give the observers a view of the Nimitz or Arc Royal so they come south of the FEBA and can be attacked.
Lastly, should the Iowa retire to Souda rather than Brindisi? There seems to be 406mm ammo at Souda for her, as well as missile reloads for her escorts.
I finally got round to playing this. Wow! That was quite a surprise at the start. I barely saved the HVUs and a few of my (thankfully less valuable) escorts paid the price.
Although it's no doubt to late to change this scenario, the intelligence briefing didn't appear as the scenario briefing said it would - 0615 came and went. If anyone else is reading this before playing this fun scenario, be aware that you'll need to grab it from the events editor.
