German FBD units

Post by Huw Jones »

Q1. One has 5 SUs in it the others have 6 SUs, should they all be 6 SUs, if not how many?

Q2. Some have 2 RAD SUs in them others 1 RAD SU, do they need RAD unit/s in them to work at 100% or can I switch them out for construction units?

I can't say that I've figured out the minimum you need to get the most repair out of an FBD unit. I will say though that it changes depending on the weather, so the amount of rail repair units you need in an FBD in clear weather is not the same as in bad weather. That makes it harder to figure out what is the minimum you need to get the maximum FBD repair speed.
All understanding comes after the fact.

You only need 5 construction units (one must be a RAD) in a FBD. In bad weather, you might lose the odd hex (as opposed to a 6 CU FBD) but if you can release a RAD (from FBDs with 2 RADs) it is well worth it.

OK great, next practice game against the AI, I will try first:

5 Construction units and 1 RAD.

Rather keep it full and not loose any hexs until most of my rail repair is done.

The idea of detaching elements from FBD units makes me highly uncomfortable. I think you really have to know what you are doing to pull this off.

One problem is, that if you get it wrong, you can't add them back in. (which is going to suck)

Another is, IMHO, you need every Rail hex converted that is possible in '41. FBD units are the only ones that give you direct control over rail-conversions.

For me, to lose out on Rail conversion due to the FBD not having enough RRV... that would greatly distress me.
Rail Repair Value (RRV) is a more permanent measure of the intrinsic level of engineering assets in the unit.
I would suggest you grab the 2 RAD units in Norway and leave your FBDs alone. Otherwise, Germany has (in GC41) about 7 other RAD units capable of auto-converting rail hexes. This will jump by another 4 once the Romanian RR is withdrawn.

IIRC you will have:
--------------
7 on the map
2 in Norway
4 (arriving T14)
--------------
13 total?
