kriegsmarin in the Indian Ocean

Post by baronvonmunchausen »

HI,

I read occasionally people who suggest sending u-boats and even surface fleet to the Indian Ocean to disrupt convoys and Persia etc...

My question is, how is this viable?

If you go there by normal mouvement it takes forever to get there, and if you cruise you loose supply hence efficiency. Plus you have to get back someday...

I presume that there is some way of basing them out there for upgrades and R&R, but all I see is Mogadishu. What else is happening here?

There are some German ships (Graf Spee) that start the game at sea. Not too hard to get there from the South Atlantic. If the Suez Canal falls it's real easy for the Italian fleet to flood the Indian Ocean with ships. When Penang becomes available there is yet another haven for Axis submarines.

It's also not necessary to get there quickly using cruise. Just eventually getting to a body of water where the Allies are thinly stretched with plentiful supply to spare is what matters.

Putting a sub in the Persian Gulf when the USSR is getting that supply route will do a lot of damage and you can set it to silent mode so it won't raid and lose supply. Same goes for those red hexes. Particularly off Sydney, Cape Town, and New Zealand - you can put a sub there on silent mode and do damage and shut off the convoy completely for a while if you do enough damage. No supply loss necessary. So these points are particularly sensitive for the Allies, in addition to the threat of regular raiding of convoy lanes.

DE 610 – Germany: Shall We Invest In The Penang Naval Base?
Event fires: When both Germany and Japan are Axis and not surrendered, Penang and Singapore are in Axis hands and Malaya has surrendered to the Axis.
Cost of accepting: 75 MPPs at 25 MPPs a turn for 3 turns.
Yes: Penang is transferred to German control but in a damaged condition, and Germany deploys a strength 3 Submarine there.
No: Nothing.
