It's Been a Long Time....

Post by JRyan »

Hello All,

I have not played Command for years, the Harpoon Series even longer. My kids have grown and gone and the time to open this back up has come. I bought my laptop right around when Command was released and it is a bit dated per se. In wanting to get an upgrade (10 years is good on a laptop), I came across this and decided to give her a go again as I am getting a new laptop.

I have purchased both Command Modern Air/Naval Operations and Command Modern Operations.

A couple of quick questions,

The version of Command Modern Operations I have, I assume I can update it to the latest, along with the Command Live Scenarios. I will probably get the other new ones, especially the Falklands one. Can I update it to the 2023 version with no issues? (I am downloading it as well, never opened my hard copy).

In looking at laptops, integrated graphics would be fine for basic needs but I assume a dedicated GPU would serve me better? Heck I got a GeForce graphics chip in my 10 year old one as well for that reason alone.

Old PC:
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz, 2401 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
GeForce GT
16GB of Ram
Windows 10 (Updated)

I am sure what I have could still run it but I want to know if the Sim can use the 32GB of Ram I want to get? Would 64GB help any?

I am sure integrated graphics would still work but as before, I am thinking it worth the extra $$ to get dedicated graphics, especially now that I see there is eye candy added.

Anyhow, hello to all those that have been part of this long journey. What a fantastic thing it has become!

One last question, is there online play for this yet?

Ethan

EDIT: I see I was here in 2019, updating but I never did play it, or I don't think I did. Hopefully I can now.

On the RAM - CMO atm is 32bit app, will not use more than ~3.5 GB before throwing out of memory errors, so more ram will have nearly no effect.
On the GPU - Similarly CMO is not particularly heavy on GPU in processing or memory, so more money spent there is unlikely to buy that much, but you might see some improvement, but definitely don't shell out on the high end of that category expecting any return in CMO that you wouldn't similarly get with a much cheaper dedicated graphics card.

As for online (real time, player vs player) play, not in the commercially available version.

Thank you for the answers. It does help.

So I can get the laptop with the integrated graphics etc., no need for dedicated. I can spend that money on a faster CPU I guess. I had forgot it was 32bit so yeah RAM is not that needed. I will stick with 32GB, double what I have now and it should last a while. I can not complain as this laptop has been solid for the 10 years. HP Envy and I was looking at the newer ones like it.

Hello Dimitris! Yes it has and I want to say this program is awesome. I am a bit hesitant on the learning curve etc and all the new stuff, but I will manage. I have the time now.

Again, thanks everyone.

Check out "P Gatcomb" youtube channel, he has in-depth explanations of the mechanics of almost every aspect of the game, and additional tips and tutorials (Link to his CMO playlist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQgODnn ... _KWwLobkoT). The learning curve will smooth substantially with that as a reference.

Oh its been bookmarked!!

Very helpful.

One thing i noticed or lack there of is dual screens. I do not see anyone using them so i guess it is not an option.

Also will do sone digging about multiple cores. If its still 32 bit, then not likely.

Should buy my new laptop next week, so still digging on specs. Will look for stuff on this site for requirements etc.

The search engine in the new forum works really well also. You should partake in that. It can help a lot in some of the more obscure topics.

Also, I have a 24 core CPU and CMO uses all of them.

I use dual monitors and would have a hard time every going back. It's almost claustrophobic once you've gotten used to multiple screens.

Uses 24 cores? Wow, cool deal.

And using a 2nd monitor is a good thing yes, good to hear.

Thanks again.

Its up and running, check the benchmark post for details.

Still having issues with Harpoon Ultimate Edition and serials but Command is way more likely what i will be playing. How far things have come....

I have a lot to learn as things have changed rather dramatically since my absence.
