War in the East 2 Appreciation Thread

Post by Nazcatraz »

War in the East 2 is really the pinnacle of computer wargames. It is deep & complex with all kind of AI assistants. Its setting is amazing and its UI is absolutely great! While War in the East & War in the West are great games, they suffer from some old UI problems that WITE2 has fixed and improved so much. In my opinion the best addition to WITE2 compared to the other 2 games are the Theater Box gameplay mechanic and the right-click function on hexes to do all kind of things (managing depots, air groups, airbases etc). It kinda ruin other computer wargames for me lol. I would always check other games out for 20 minutes or so and come back to WITE2 and be like "nothing beats this".

Out of all the videogames I play, I love War in the East 2 the most (and I love and play a lot of videogames). Thank you to Gary Grigsby, Joel Billings, Pavel Zagzin, Trey Marshall and everyone else who involved in making this great video game. We can't wait to see what you guys have in store for us in the future. Be it a Steel Panther remake (Steel Tiger), War in Europe (I think about this game every day, imagine a Western Front with all kind of changes made in WITE2) or a rumored naval-based wargame I saw from WITE2 Steam Discussion the other month. You guys are absolutely legends!

Yes, I must say it is an amazing game given the wealth of modeling and functionality.

As a Software Engineer (retired) I have to say the architecture of using batch processing steps (mainly common in 70's) was genius. Because I doubt any other architecture could have supported a game of this scope and complexity (possibly a highly parallel architecture, but that would have required 4X the programming resources and a new engine). Also, I will note that the UI and ability to manipulate data is on par with commercial software products.

Finally, in an age of documentation where users are forced to write Wiki's for the developer or YouTubers are required to produce instructional videos, the documentation is outstanding.

You've have been in the forum since 2003? That's amazing.

Well, needless to say, I was born in the shadow of WWII.

Until around 2000, I was prop head and a very good one in competitions. But cardiac and neurological issues grounded me. So, I picked up ground combat. At first, I purchased CMBO from BFC (then, BTS). I finally got the basics figured out.

Around 2001, BFC was pushing a new 3rd party offering RDOA (OP Market Garden) by Panther Games. I asked a lot a dumb questions in the forum. So, of course, the owner invited to become a beta (that's one way to shut people up nicely).

Around 2003, we left BFC and joined the Matrix constellation. Here we published: HTTR, COTA, and BFTB. However, after David Heath sold Matrixgames to Slitherine. Panther Games left and we moved to David's new company, Lock and Load Publishing.

But I did have a contract with Matrix Games (not David O'Connor or David Heath) regarding being a beta, and continued to play the role of a beta. But in 2021, I found myself ideologically opposed to the new management regarding how to motivate/treat volunteers and resigned. Now, I am just a player.

So, I have been here that long. One day, I downloaded the manual to this game and was blown away after a year of HOI4 buyer's remorse. So far, I own EDBTR, WITP-AE, WITW, and WITE-2. I would put GG in the same class as people like Will Wright, Sid Meier, Philippe Thibaut, etc...
