Red Storm vs. Southern Storm for a strategy fan but franchise newbie

Post by Monygham »

Hello!

I was wondering how much is Southern Storm different/better than Red Storm.
As there is a huge discount on RS now on Steam (-70%) and SS is quite pricey. I watched a few videos on YT on SS and I think I will like it but I'm considering if SS is worth the difference.

I like serious and deep strategy games, I'm not scared by a steep learning curve. Yet, I'm not familiar with this franchise. What would you advise: start with RS and buy SS if I like it or go straight for SS - because it is worth the price even for someone who is not a die-hard veteran and fan of the series that already squeezed from RS everything possible? And why do you think so?

Thank you in advance.

I say go with Southern Storm. It's a significant upgrade over Red Storm. I think the difference in price is well worth it.

Southern Storm is the way to go. It is the current engine and the direction of the future. All future DLCs and games will be built using this engine.

I'll go against the grain here. I'd go with RS at 70% off. The gameplay basics are pretty much the same, it's just that SS has been expanded and is better in every way. Since you don't have any experience with the series go with the cheaper option to test the waters. If you like the gameplay you'll be getting SS anyway. I haven't really dug into SS yet as I'm still playing RS pbem and haven't been able to convince my playing partner to get it yet. The game just shines in PBEM, and i'm sure SS will be no different.

Red Storm is a lot of fun. If you like it, you'll be happy to buy Southern Storm, and subsequent DLC's.

You'll love Southern Storm PBEM then. I appreciate that games are 10-15 turns on the low end and you're not spending an hour on each turn. I like pairing it with Combat Mission... The direct opposite. Makes for a nice break.
