Training for soviet troops and pilots

Post by wieschi »

Can anyone tell me what is the best way to train soviet troops and pilots?
Which scenario is the best?

- leave them in reserve
- a theater box with battles (Northern front)
- a theater box without battles (Transcaucasus)
- on the map in rest mode

The pilots train in the reserve. Not sure about the ground units.

On ground. It "depends" if you need units on the map urgently, that's more important than having them trained. Otherwise they can train up faster in the reserve

It completely depends upon your needs and the ground unit in question. I'm not sure that being in reserve guarantees any training bonus, though IIRC, being 10 or more hexes from an enemy unit, in reserve status and in good supply, do. If instead of boosting off map theatre numbers you need units on map to maintain or build rear area forts, units in training, including convertibles, are well suited. SU's held in a rear area HHQ will train well and also accumulate CPPs while not accidentally being committed to battle. I tend to take SU's from reserve a few weeks before thaey're at a useful experience level.

I've seen variable results which I can't explain but pilots do sometimes appear not to train in reserve as fast as on map in rear area superiority AD's.

My strategy for newly built Soviet ground units is to keep them in the reserve TB to train until their experience is at least 45, ideally 50, deploy them to the map and move near where they'll be used in combat but a few hexes away from the front line for a month or more to build up preparation (I usually keep an army for each front behind the front lines to attach incoming units to. If the newly recruited unit is being used to replace a battered one which needs to be refit, then I just exchange the old unit for the new one and put the old one in the front's reserve army to refit. If I'm using the new unit to increase the number of troops on the front line, I'll commit the entire army instead of doing things one division at a time). With SUs I tend to wait until they're fully trained (50) before sending them to the map, since if I do it the way Mehring suggested I tend to accidentally send under-trained SUs to the front.
