State of the Game?

Post by basilstaghare »

After reading many posts on hotfixes, etc., I was wondering if the game (as of the latest 1.25.02 Hotfix #4) offers a stable and playable experience for a solo player? I realize that tweaks are ongoing, but does the game in its current state offer a enjoyable solo experience? Thanks.

Short answer is Yes. I have spent a LOT of time improving and enhancing the AI computer opponent for a more challenging and enjoyable solo experience, or for using the computer opponent as some of the players in a PBEM game. The game is MUCH better now than it was, when many players stopped playing and were very critical of the AI. For a list of improvements and enhancements, see https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 7#p5091877 with latest updates.

I have to say, having delved deeply into Marshall Ellis's game code over the past several years, AI programming is not trivial. It is complex and complicated, and must be carefully programmed for the specific game and specific rules being used. Many folks cannot appreciate this fact of life and expect computer opponents to be brilliant upon game release. Not going to happen, and certainly not for games like EIA and WIF. But I have been slowly working at it and the changes have been noticeably positive. As I said, it is MUCH better now. Not perfect and not likely to ever be perfect, but more challenging and enjoyable.

Thanks for reply. Most complex computer wargames struggle with the AI being competitive. I expect and am okay with that. I was just wondering if the overall gameplay at this point was stable, relatively bugfree and made for a decent AI opponent. Sounds like all of those boxes have been checked. I appreciate your time and passion with the game.

There is a fine line between passion and insanity. LOL
