Next Unit

Post by HobbesACW »

If you have an info screen displayed such as the unit dashboard you can sometimes hit the next unit hotkey and the unit dashboard will show information on the next unit but quite often this doesn't work. It seems a shame as it would be very useful to be able to do this rather than having to close the screen then hit next unit and then click on the info screen hotkey again. As it works sometimes can it not be made to work always?

Chris, sounds like a good idea to me. I will check it out with the crew and add the JIRA if we can do it.
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!

Help me understand the whole story, please.

Can you frame this as "I want to have next/previous unit controls so I can <fill in this blank>" I'm talking about tasks you want to accomplish and how this kind of control set helps.

I ask because at first glance, it seems not to hard to do. I do see potential for it not working quite right. Reasons are:

1. Internally, there is a list of all units in a scenario. It's generally all one side, then the other. Until a scenario's force gets edited in Scenario Editor. And that list starts out with regions of OB coherence, but drifts from that as a scenario gets developed and edited, so we can guarantee cycling that list results in an "expected" next/previous unit.

2. Traversing the OB (with current unit subordination) is another approach, but I'd ask for your input regarding the fact that you can have several OB trees (think independent units with subordinates). So how do you see the transition between these trees happening. What's your expectation? At what point does "next" in a Regiment leave ground forces and get into the Air Support units, for example?

3. How useful is this when your force is a Brigade or Regiment and is organized on a platoon level and you have a hundred or more units? I ask you relate this to the workflow you want to support. Understanding your desired workflow is very helpful to us.

Thanks.

I don't have much I can add really. If I hit the next unit hotkey the focus will always move to the next unit. If I do this when an info screen is displayed the focus sometimes but not always moves to the next unit. Obvioulsy it would be nice if this were to always work. But just a nice to have to save a few extra key presses.

Cheers,
Chris

Chris, thanks. I see the problem with Next Unit/Prev Unit not working consistently. Has been JIRA-d.

Rob made some nice improvements to the Next-Unit, Prev Unit behavior, which should appear in the next game update.
Thanks again for reporting the problem.
