Replacements going to the "wrong" units

Decisive Campaigns: Ardennes Offensive is the fourth wargame in the Decisive Campaign series. Covering the battles in the Ardennes between December 1944 and January 1945, it brings to life Operational wargaming by lowering the scale to just above tactical level.

Replacements going to the "wrong" units

Post by Zeedub85 »

I've seen a few quirks with the replacement system. Replacements do get up to the front, but often to the "wrong" units. Some examples: I've seen Pz IV battalions receive Panthers and once a Tiger, and the 501st receive a Pz IV and a Stug. The 501st itself is another problem. It was an SS unit (the old 101st, Michael Wittmann's outfit -- it changed its number to 501 in September when it refitted with Tiger IIs), but in the game it takes Wehrmacht replacements. Which I found out when I tried to give away that Pz IV and Stug to other 1st SS units. Anyway, it seems that the units just request "tanks" and get whatever is available. It's actually kind amusing. Typical army rear-echelon screw-ups, right? But at the game programing level, is it possible to have units specify what equipment they are requesting?

On the plus side of the system, Panzer Brigade 150 has managed to accumulate 10 more Panthers and 20 (!!) Shermans, along with a bunch of American trucks. I know some of those came from the replacements, since the report would state things like "2 captured tanks." But it seems to have more than could be accounted for that way. Are units able to capture equipment and use it? However it did it, it's fun to have the unit resemble its original concept, instead of the almost completely useless unit it was in reality.

It's because replacements are set as generic
Tanks
Trucks
Infantry
instead of
Med Tanks/Hvy Tanks
Infantry/Auxiliary Infantry (rear/guard)
Hvy Mortars/Mortars
This way German Horse Artillery can get trucks or medium short range mortars instead 12cm ones.

Easy to fix by the way ;-)

There is no such thing as a historically accurate strategy game. Every game stops being accurate from the very first move player make. The first unit that moves ahistorically, first battle with non-historical results, means we ride into the unknown.

Interesting post here, and like the way the OP handles it. He may be slightly annoyed, but keeps his tongue in cheek.

Going from distant memory, there's a rather fun menu item (in the Simple Editor) that can change the equipment a unit gets to almost anything else in the game. And I think in the same menu there's a way to specify it for replacements, too.

I can dig back in, but have a feeling you guys know this already!

I also should point out that the 7,5cm leIG 37 is classified as artillery, not as IG. I had to change it to IG in my adjusted VG Btl TO&E, because in the original all the IG are dumped into the 13.Kp of the VG Rgt.

Good point with those infantry guns.

Also: Horse Teams transport type value is set as "transportable" not "transporter". So they are not sent as replacements to units (I think).

Not really annoyed, just a little bemused, and curious about the game mechanics. It's just a game, and I can usually find the humor in the silly actions by the computer. I bet the guys in 3rd Pz Rgt were annoyed as heck to see that Tiger II show up.

Anyway, I apologize for not returning to the board to follow up until now. Thank you all for the answers.

As for 150 Pz, I set them to priority in my next game to see what happened and they did start receiving some Shermans and Panthers right away while still in the rear area. I really do like this, since it eventually turns it into a very useful unit. It's one of the fun "what-ifs" in the game.
