Re: The World at War ELO Tournament
[LOSS] ElvisJJonesRambo (Axis) vs JackMack (Allies) --- Axis surrender October 1941.
British DOW and capture of Solomon Islands.
Solomons gone.
Peleliu Island captured
Saigon captured, Vietnam cutoff.
2 Transports sunk outside DEI.
Japanese morale dumps.
Technically, this does not violate ELO, I'll just surrender.
Was well aware of this tactic, it's been passed around.
I wouldn't have left my transports sitting there if going this route.
Guess I need a prenuptial agreement to play a game.
Will take the loss.

HarrySmith (Axis) defeats Pekkavilamoura (Allies) April 44. Allies lost Russia end of 43 and China March 44. ME hanging on and Operation Sealion launched with Germans well established. Pekka plays a competitive game and has learnt from our previous game. Look forward to playing him in the future.

Re: The World at War ELO Tournament
Elo Ended [WIN] Archmache as Axis vs [LOSS] ElvisJJonesRambo as Allies
Heavy hitting game.
Axis punched through Low Countries fast during winter, thought about all France, but was stalled due to surprise allied attack on the Regina Marina. Italian battleships and cruisers were stationed at North African French ports to bombard the supply, but Royal Navy punched hard and fast. Italy lost all naval units in one turn. So much for the Mare Nostrum ...
Monty pushed west across the sands, taking Tobruk and Bengazhi. RN bombarded ports, Carriers provided cover, but Luftwaffe managed to pound a couple RN ships, crippling their aggressive power until the shipyards could replace them. RAF had sent Strat bombers to pound the ports but did not attack Tripoli! Air Force was sent to deal with Italians in East Africa.
Meanwhile Axis diplomats persuade Spain to Join Axis. Nice MPP boost, but Spanish troops never left the Iberian peninsula the whole war. Super expensive to repair and upgrade - is it worth the 20 extra MPP from the Mines?? US mobilization skyrocketed almost 20%, this changed the Pacific War.
Afrika Korps lands in Tripoli - Allies surprised! Rommel smashes across the desert, destroyed armies, a tank unit, a couple fighters and an HQ. AH may get his Ark of the Covenant, but somehow the SA units must have smuggled it out in time. Rommel takes a break in Iraq, waiting until after US joins to push into Persia to avoid US mobilization ...
Subs have their happy time, but when a couple destroyers enter the Atlantic with level 2 ASW the entire Kriegsmarine retires to the Med. Didn't want to lose any NM to hit the threshold of 110% for the boost. So ended the battle of the Atlantic.
Barb starts as usual. Dead Russians everywhere. JJones has units defending the north heavily. OKH sends every panzer and bomber unit to the south. Schwerpunk is the name of the game. Ground attack aircraft pounded southern Russia the entire game. Crimea falls late 1941, Case Blue is off to a 6 month headstart. Northern and Central army groups are stalled at Smolensk. Russians feighnt for Finland, but realize they can't get far. Winter hits, Germans die.
Japan cannot advance far into China since US mobilization so high due to NA and Gibralter. China is getting strong. Eyes on the West turn to East. Japan pounds pearl, and rapidly expands across the Pacific. Stalled in Indochina, Indian and Australia SF counter Japanese SF, which are countered by Japanese carriers. Serious battles for essentially useless land. Japan hopes to pull US eyes away from Ostfront. Take NZ, attack Australia but are stopped after getting Brisbane. Stall out. Jap navy cannot return home. US plows across undefended islands, lands and shuts of convoys. Japan had pushed hard into Russia - capturing some mines, but Japan is essentially toast.
JJones pushes with Chinese units into Northern china without air cover. Japan waits, they push farther. Then Vet Japan Strat bombers crush supply. Experienced banzai charges liquidate 0 supply Chinese. Total slaughter. Probably 10 units destroyed over 2 turns in low supply. China will take 2 years to get that MPP back.
Germans take oil fields, link up with Persia, pound Stalingrad. Trouble with the Afghani partisans. A concentrated push on India, leaves Allies hopeless. All Indian troops were locked in the "100 million souls for Japan" battle on the home islands. Vet 2 tanks with manstein one tapped two tanks 0-10 and 1-8. Devastating.
Allies cleared Atlantic. Broke into Baltic, sunk all German shipping. Took Norway and then surprise attacked Finland. Tried to diplo Sweden. Should have just attacked it. Gives about 350 MPP and the mines are worth about 50 MPP a turn. Very juicy.
Leningrad marsh battle is where Tolkien got his inspirit for the dead marshes. Tons of German Troops die to American air power. Germans ignore and push on Kubysheve and the Ural mines, taking them. Totally ignored central front. American SF land in northern Russia and attack Germans. NM for US plummets as they don't have PT to reduce damage. Moscow falls late 1943 and Allies sue for peace.
Allied engaged in total Strat bombing campaign, lots of distraction with Dieppe and SF, but I have found Axis should never take the bait, until they know its the "big invasion." Then bring panzers and air. Everything else should pound Russia and never stop from Barb starting.
Great game with great turn timers by JJones - always enjoy the lively talk during the game.

Re: The World at War ELO Tournament
Extra notes in my loss to Archmache as Axis: Was crazy fought game. Made couple key mistakes.
Mistake #1: I really enjoyed destroying the Italian Fleet in early 1940. Was a complete ambush. Light green ships were floating around Allied ports in Med, drinking, laughing, and dancing.....until torpedoes and shells sank the whole lot. Problem, Spain isn't happy about it. Axis were able to bribe them quite easily. This sucked, big-time. Won't be doing that again, then again, who knows what I'll do.
Mistake #2: With the aggressive Japanese going for Australia, I gambled that the Island of Japan was weak. And it was. Captured the Twin cities with Anti-Air, but was too stupid to reinforce properly. Lost them back quickly. This setback destruction a Year. Early war, was too busy helping, the hapless Russian slaughter.
Beyond that, game was crazy as usual. Insane fights at Leningrad and Central Russia. Was fun, until every Red unit was dead. Soaked in blood.
Fast turns, good action.

Re: The World at War ELO Tournament
[WIN] ElvisJJonesRambo (Axis) vs Petedalby (Allies) --- German & Hungarian forces are proud to accept Allied surrender in 1945. This was a classic game with two of the biggest names in the industry. The victory is based on "going to the judges scorecard" with 10-point must system. Usual battles, but they were big, long and fierce. Death everywhere in Russia, Italy & DEI.
Highlight points.
1) Massive 3-year battle at Stalingrad. The pieces looked like Custer's Last Stand. Pete made a circle of units 3+ deep. Germans ditto. Much death. Reds refused to retreat. Once this battle broke, so did the Urals.
2) Finland and Leningrad --- Reds held Leningrad and later in 1944, the British took out Helsinki and moved towards Poland, but were stopped at Riga in 1945.
3) Italy (Rome) received 6-piece drumming to surrender early 1943. Pete continued the North, but found SS-Panzer and elite Luftwaffe in the mountains are deadly. Yanks tried Southern France, didn't end well for the young Marines.
4) Romania --- Yanks came thru Greece, helped Romania leave the war and took the Oil. In 1945, Hungary was a fortress of mountain strength. Better supply helped win some air battles. Allies were split. British in Riga, Yanks in Romania, helped my chances along with better morale and supply.
5) Pacific --- Yanks picked away on soft targets and islands. 1944, huge Yank Navy and Marines landed on Eastern DEI. Problem, the IJN showed in force, with delayed 1945 Tora, Tora, Tora and pounded the Capitalists' invaders
Lost my last 3 games, had good focus, against a top player and good guy. Didn't walk away with clean sheets, much death and constant counter punching by both sides. War, it's hell (then real hell/heaven)
Will play opponent again when I recharge batteries.

Re: The World at War ELO Tournament
It was a cracking game - well done!! I thought your play with the KM was excellent. And no wacky stuff for a change - that's what tends to undo you. I made 1 critical mistake in Russia which cost me dearly. A well deserved win for the King.[WIN] ElvisJJonesRambo (Axis) vs Petedalby (Allies)

Re: The World at War ELO Tournament
ELO ended Ktonos (Axis) defeats ElvisJJonesRambo (Allies).
Allies surrender on April 1944.
Germany did a very late invasion of USSR, almost September 1941, and Barbarossa was quickly halted by bad weather. But on late 1942 the Germans steamrolled center and south.
Stalemate and not much in Africa for most of the match.
US mobilized very late due to commonwealth transports near the Philippines which isolated them for up to mid 1942. They entered the war when Japan moved against British positions in east Africa aiming to potentially turn the tide in Egypt, and invaded Siberia to help the Germans close the deal with Soviet Union. That brought US mob from 6% to 100% within 2 turns, which I didn't expect to happen so fast, so Japan was caught out of position in the Pacific. So no Pearl Harbor, no Malaisia, or Indonesian invasions. The Philipines became a thorn on my side from there on, while Japan remained on the defensive in the seas.
Anyways great game, tense all over. Elvis resigned when USSR surrendered, but I think I would continue if I was him. Our other mirror game is in progress, and in this one he will most probably win.
