Geography

Post by DavidRob0 »

I had an idea to try a sneaky ambush of ships leaving Sydney, bound for somewhere else.
My first idea was to head a relief convoy to Norfolk Island in the South Pacific/East Coral Sea.

Problem #1 - one of my destroyers ran aground in the "shipping channel" in Sydney Harbour, near Bradley's Head. Checking the water depths I found that there is no actual shipping channel on the map - must be using the soundings from the 19th century. No biggie - work around is simple.

Problem #2 - what is shown on the map as Norfolk Island is in fact Lord Howe Island. Norfolk Island is considerably further north east of there - at about 29 degrees 2 mins S, 167 degrees 57 mins E. Work around is again fairly simple, but renaming the island to something else is a bit tedious.

These simple mistakes I suspect can be easily corrected - especially the 2nd one. But they call into question the rest of the map's accuracy. I don't suppose there are any organised checks on the globe's accuracy?

The map location labels are provided by Stamen Design (http://maps.stamen.com/) and are outside our direct control. Sorry!
