which version to use to get CBV/GBA
Hi,
We just had a game end and want to start a game with CBV's and ideally GBA's (inspired by seeing Ronnie editing the file to use GBA's in his AAR). Which version should we start with? And how to do a clean(est) install of that version? Is it 5.0.10?
Thanks

Re: which version to use to get CBV/GBA
I'm running the latest public beta, v5.0.0.10 (debug). The optional rules coded (=1) and uncoded (=0) in 5.0.00.10 are show below, as well as the optional rules for the Advance, Standard, Novice compared to what I'm currently using (GW-CF-03).jjdenver wrote: Mon May 22, 2023 3:33 am Hi,

My experience so far (thru 8ND40) with v5.0.0.10 (debug) is that it's as stable and with supply calculation times on par with any earlier version. CBV is coded and working pretty well except for a missing German CBV or two. The missing CBVs are in the game file but in the removed pool. I recall editing them in just as I'll have to edit the GBA's into the game.
I also have V- & Atomic bombs enable. Haven't got to the point where I can build any so I don't how well they work.

Thank you Ronnie I think we'll go for 5.0.10. To install that we install 4.x first?
Will you add the procedure to edit GBA's from force pool and replaced units back to force pool to your layman's guide?

Re: which version to use to get CBV/GBA
(1) 5.00.00.10 is a hot patch, downloadable via Dropbox.
(2) It says you need Publix beta 4.02.00.00, which isn't available via Registered Downloads. A later version 4.04.01 is, so I would assume the 5.00.00.10 hot patch will work over this later version. But you do need a 4.x version over which you apply the 5.00.00.10 hot patch.
(3) The hot patch includes more than a executable. It includes some "initial" AI files that you also need to copy over your 4.x install.
(4) I will include a section in my game file editing capture document, and editing thread also, on GBA to include moving the unit promoted back to the force pool.

Thanks for the reply. Is it considered safe now to use cvp's? Are those bugs basically wiped out?
Re: which version to use to get CBV/GBA
CVPs (carrier planes)? Or, CBVs? Assuming you meant the latter, or even the former, I haven't experienced any issues with either.jjdenver wrote: Thu May 25, 2023 3:33 pm Thanks for the reply. Is it considered safe now to use cvp's? Are those bugs basically wiped out?
Except for one small glitch with CBVs.
Hopefully folks who's familiar with this rule in the cardboard and paper version will correct me if I'm wrong, the SS Frank & I Slovak Germany CBVs (last 2 CBVs on the list in the cap below) weren't available when they should have been. They appeared as a future force pool addition instead of being available to be built at the start. I just edited the game file to put them in the production pool.

Re: which version to use to get CBV/GBA
I've had issues with them (CBV) when they arrive as reinforcements to a fully stacked city, and the off-city reinforcement was in play. Then the CBV could not be placed next to the city, and the game froze. Not sure if that bug has been fixed, or not, as it is an ancient bug (and CBV hasn't been available for a long time either so not sure if that situation has come up recently).
No issues at all for me lately. Although the two missing German/ CBV is annoying. I think that there is one, or two, Free French CBV that might be wrongly to be considered French (although this might have been corrected).

I meant CVP, but thank you for the info on CBV. Ronnie the editing from force pool is something that is described in your guide?

Yes, I think so.jjdenver wrote: Fri May 26, 2023 1:10 am I meant CVP, but thank you for the info on CBV. Ronnie the editing from force pool is something that is described in your guide?
The force pool fields are defined in the "Unit Definition & Representation Game File Records" section.
There are (currently) three sections that contain examples of editing these (force pool fields), which are:
"How to Move PIL from the Destroyed to the Production Pool."
"How to Return Lent Air Units."
"Axis Naval Mode Edit (Example)

If memory serves, the last two CBVs should not be available at the start. They should be free the first time but not placed on the spiral until Paris is taken and Zagreb is taken -- and only if they are taken by Germany.

The CBV that I think are referred previously to are the Slovak one that is added once Germany holds Bratislava, and the Vienna one. Both should be available at start, and they are not.paulderynck wrote: Fri May 26, 2023 11:42 pm If memory serves, the last two CBVs should not be available at the start. Re: which version to use to get CBV/GBA
Hi Ronnie,
A common problem that occurs is that sometimes we get to RTB phase and there has been some naval combat or other event that leaves some cp's without being set to sentry and they are forced to RTB. Then we have to go back to Stay at Sea phase, set them to sentry and do it all over again. I searched both your document and this thread to find the word "sentry" and don't find it. Have you documented somewhere how to set cp's to sentry so they won't go back to base during RTB phase?
We are currently stuck on this in a game and I'd rather edit sentry than have to go back and pass file around to 4 players to get back to the same spot.
Thanks

This can be prevented by using the arrows in the command form to cycle through the sea area's during the stay at sea phase. Then you can check the convoys if they will stay at sea or not.

Re: which version to use to get CBV/GBA
It's a very simple edit. I make the edit often and it saves me a bundle of time. You need to edit the Unit Status Record(USR) field #14 to stay at sea (=2). The first screen cap is from page 7 of the editing capture document; however, I didn't (haven't yet) included the example (following 3 screen CAPs).jjdenver wrote: Sat May 27, 2023 6:40 am Hi Ronnie,
