American Civil War

Post by tcarusil »

I am looking for suggestions for a game about the American Civil War and/or Gettysburg in particular. I just returned from Gettysburg and have been bitten by the bug. While I understand that diplomacy, research, and production are important aspects of any real life conflict, these areas do not interest me. I just want to fight the battles with the men and equipment provided. With this in mind any recommendations are appreciated. Thank you in advance.

John Tiller's Battleground Series. Start out with Gettysburg and move on from there.

WDS is having its summer sale now and you can pick up John Tiller's Campaign Gettysburg for a reasonable price. They also have other Civil War titles that you may find interesting.

The WDS games in the ACW series are the best when it comes to the Civil War. Heck any of the WDS series is excellent.

“Civil War II” by AGEOD for a strategic view of the war. I sunk dozens of hours in it.

Sid Meier's Gettysburg

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Meier's_Gettysburg!

I too was struck by the bug when I visited Gettysburg in 1968 - I gather the fancy huge diorama in a styling building has since been demolished.

You can get it online in some places, it runs on XP - but I've got two old windows 7 laptops that run it (sometimes - odd graphics things).

A car boot /garage sale might turn up a physical copy. It came with a great manual too.

It has a random scenario generator too - something I think all games should have - so if you don't like the ones it comes with alter them or make your own from scratch.

And some great in game comments - "Good work, General"
